DSG 6 Speed Service Time

Featured Replies

Hi All

My Octavia is just reaching the 40k mark. I just had a major service and was advised that I will need to have the DSG oil changed shortly. They have a standard £175 charge to do this. I asked the service people whether it was something that sits in the service record memory in the car. They said that it didn't.

What are people's experiences with this? Is it something that needs to be done by Skoda? I have VCSD and was considering doing the job myself. They sell kits on eBay for £85 and I have a friendly local factor who gives me trade prices so potentially cheaper without all the delivery charges.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Garnett

I never tried DIY. Just got the local dealer to do it around the 40K mark. Seemed like a good idea from a preventive maintenance viewpoint. All is well at 50K.

Depends how long you plan to keep the car.

Overall it's not a lot of money to keep the DSG working properly.

If anything subsequently fails you can blame the dealer, whereas if you do it yourself. ....

I've heard scare stories of Audi boxes failing and claims being rejected because the DSG oil services was late.  For £175 it's probably not worth the risk, I've just had mine done.

It's a very DIY friendly job to be honest. If you can do an engine oil change you can do a DSG.

You should only be concerned with getting it done at a dealer if you're still in warranty in my opinion.

Take car for a very quick drive (don't want it to be too warm just not stone cold)

Drain oil

Remove battery, battery tray and air filter box (not essential but access is fairly tight otherwise)

Remove DSG filter cap and filter

Re-fit drain plug and snorkel/level tube

Fill gearbox (4.5 to 5 litres back in)- you need to place a tube tightly over the filter hole and a funnel into the top to get it filling at a decent rate

Fit new filter, washer and cap

Run engine and go through reverse, drive and neutral several times holding in each position for a few seconds.

Measure DSG oil temperature (35 to 45c I think)

Remove drain plug (but leave the inner tube in place) and wait till it stops running and re-fit the plug.

Just visited my local Halfords as they have 20% off until 4/1/17 and they looked very quiet! Fixed price of £68. I can't buy the oil for that and no problem with the warranty.

Thanks all

Errrr. Really?

£68 must be a mistake. I would double check what oil they are intending on using as it HAS to be DSG specific oil and normal ATF fluid cannot in any circumstances be used.

If it all checks out then that's a bargain!

A Written Confirmation from the Halfords Service Centre would be a necessity that they knew how to service a 6 Speed Wet Clutch DSG,

then a copy of their insurance, the technicians qualifications & a sworn on some kind of bible at the risk of death assurance they understand everything,

and still i would not trust them to refill the windscreen washer bottle.

I personally wouldn't take the risk - I'd just get it done by a dealer. I'll be doing the same when mine's due.

Got a written quote to make sure I got the 20% Christmas Discount. I think they got the price wrong as well! They keep ATF-DCT oil in bulk. They also had a full set of instructions in their computer for the 6 speed Octy. It is definitely mine. It is a 1.5 hour job and they do plenty as there are al four main dealers within a mile. Mercedes is also the same. They suggested that it is taken for a drive when they finish and returned and they top up again. Maybe there are good and bad branches? My experience with main dealer has been poor. I trust Lucas more and that is saying something!. Possibly because I bought from a neighbouring main dealer who had the spec I wanted. It has taken 2 years for them to agree that the radio is rubbish and put a new one in. Then only as Skoda UK took my case. I wont buy another Skoda because the service has been so poor and this is car number 4. The dealer who does my service wont listen to anything that comes from Briskoda and is rude about it. It is a shame because it was always a real plus for the brand.

When I asked for service on DSG oil change, dealer told me factory and service books didn't specify any oil change and that it's long life oil and that there's no need to do service on DSG?

Every 60000km. Oilfilter and oilchange.

Same on Audi with the same type gearbox too.

Croat,

Which was correct for a 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG (DQ200) unless it was one that was part of the World Wide Recall which was just a Service Campaign in Europe.

Changing that never needing changed Synthetic Oil for Mineral Oil & doing a Software Update.

Skoda Dealership Employees can be as useless as others in other businesses.

Skoda New Zealand had a proper Service Campaign on the DQ200 which was not only on Petrol Engines but 1.6 TDI's.

Mine was one of the last wet clutch units in November 2014. I understand why people are nervous about Lucas but my experience is no better with the main dealer. I have to go via the Skoda Call Centre for so many issues now. It takes weeks and for the radio 2 years to get it sorted. They inspected a fault in August and replicated the error. I was told a software fix was needed and it was imminent. After 3 months nothing. Despite it all being detailed in a written report the service manager said he had not seen it personally and made me drive 30 miles just to look at the radio for 15 seconds. After 2 years they are changing the radio. It cost £1500 and I expect it to work. Do you think I need to ask the dealer the same question about thier qualifications? Next time I buy it won't be a Skoda and it will be the same dealer that sells it that services it. Goodwill is a thing of the past I'm afraid.
