Number Change

Featured Replies

In the process of buying a pre reg car.

Not too keen on the plate on it, not going to post the number but it borders on the amusingly memorable - some folk might even consider it a slight bonus although I doubt that it is 'good' enough to have value as a number.

Much as I'm not keen on private plates I would prefer the most ordinary, undistinctive and unmemorable plate possible.

I'm in Scotland and only stipulations are would like Scottish plates and an age appropriate 66

SA, SB, SC, SD, SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ (Glasgow), SK, SL, SM, SN, SO (Edinburgh). SP, SR, SS, ST (Dundee), SU, SV, SW (Aberdeen), SX, SY (Inverness).

Anyone got any experience of doing something like this?

Just go on the DVLA website and buy any Scottish prefix 66 plate that you fancy that is not fancy, but cheap.

No difficulty in any way.

£399 for something with S*66 *** is the cheapest i think.

?

Are you buying it with your money, not financed or the likes, if you are going to be the Registered Keeper but not the 'owner',

then check with the lender / owner.

Wondering if just retaining the number with DVLA for £80, and therefore being assigned an age related replacement reg, would work.

Downside is no control over what replacement number will be - could be a worse one, someone round here used to have an SL** UT* reg. Pretty sure it was luck of the draw rather than a personal choice.

Would an assigned replacement still be S*66 ***?

Is it going to be your car when it comes to selling it so no Paper Work Issues with Finance or the likes.?

I liked Reg Numbers i had before.

FUD & FUK were the best.

Yes car will be mine - no finance involved

Cheapest DVLA plates are £250 all in.

I'd try the putting the plate on retention, you have 3 goes before it costs more lol

That sounds good, I take it that by the above you can decline up to 2 randomly assigned plates (provided you accept the 3rd) before any financial penalty.

No starting S / 66 plates currently for £250 though.

Maybe after the 17 Plates are out.

Come on, at least liven this thread up and tell us the three letter word, where's the harm!?

Doesn't the official site answer these questions?

Most of them, but extra info below was only found out on this forum

I used to be indecisive but now I'm not sure.

SO66 DAL that's the cheapest plate !

Same price as others that are £399 is it not?

SO66 DAL will now be snapped up by some 'Carry Out Eatery' probably....

PS,

Still confused by this idea of putting the Reg No. on Retention to get alternative registrations & 2 getting goes at it without it costing more,

The Insurer & the DVLA will love this game of lucky dip.

Not sure exactly how it works myself but that's the info from matt1chelski. I have not checked this out but have no reason to doubt it. Presume insurance would only know about one change, declined numbers would not count as a change.

Sorry, I think I've been misunderstood.

If the cheapest is £250 (although it sounds like it's more than that from other posts for a 66 plate) then after buying 3 x £80 (£240) plates it's still less than buying a £250 one from DVLA.

The cheapest are £250, but not the current numbers, they come in at £399.

Are you buying a new Registration Number for £80 when you put a Number on SORN or with VED paid on Retention?

No, dont you just put the current plate on retention for £80 and new new one gets issued automatically.

My mistake, read it wrong. Got it now.

Thanks

That's how I'm reading DVLA site.

No control over number other than it will be age appropriate.

Not sure if first two letters will reflect region you are in though.

Last 3 letters obviously pot luck.

As a slight aside - Odd the random jumbles of letters and numbers the DVLA are charging a premium of £399 for.

Not odd,

that is just the numbers there are available & not allocated on a list to Dealers etc, current 66 plate numbers, it is the same every issue.

They might mean something to someone, or really most will never sell and just get used if enough registrations before March 2017.
