Loose Stone/Heat Shield

Featured Replies

The pressed metal stone/heatshield that fits behind the rear brake disk on my 2010 Twindoor has come loose and is rattling andbeing scraped by the brake disc.

Fortunately I was only about a mile from home when this happened so I made it back with no collateral damage having been done.

Is this a known fault?

Does anyone have any idea how much this is likely to cost to get it fixed?

I assume it's a reasonably simple task once the wheel and brake disc has been removed (I've just had the wheel off to check but don't fancy dismantling the brakes on my drive as it'll be dark soon and I want to watch the football on telly)

I'm sure I read someone on here removed theirs, so maybe do a quick search. Good luck!

I've removed them from other peoples cars before by just grinding them off (think i had to resort to a dremel for access) as they didn't plan on replacing them. On older cars they tend to rot through around the fasteners and just rattle around.

Personally, I would prefer to have them as they give the caliper and disk and bit of protection from the elements. The biggest pain is taking the caliper carrier off as the bolts can be quite tight and awkward to access if you're a home gamer doing it on the drive.

If the rear calipers have to come off to remove this guard it's a proper pain without a car lift. I did this the summer before last replacing the disks and it took ages to break loose one of the caliper bolts. I could have had it removed almost effortlessly with a long breaker bar but the ground was in the way, so I was limited to what would fit in the wheel arch. SuperbTWM - you wouldn't happen to be an AvE fan on youtube? That's the first place I've heard the term 'home gamer' used, but it's so perfect I use it myself all the time now.

Haha, I am indeed an AvE subscriber, he's great to watch.

Well he certainly knows a skookum choocher when he sees one :).

Well, just a bit less than £130 later and I have a new OSR brake disc backing plate and a new battery fitted.

Not too bad I suppose.
