Smartlink - Worth it?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a satnav, but I was wondering if the Smartlink is worth the £150? As the car is leased for 3 years, it didn't seem worth the license cost - But then I wonder... If the requirement is just the license, then can it be transferred between cars during handover? ie, when the car is replaced, can the system be deactivated on one car, and reactivated on the new one in 3 years time?

Does smartlink work on the move?.

On some but not all apps.

Not a lot of use if it does not show a sat-nav app on the move.

Social media and email would be a worry

Social media and email would be a worry

I suspect they will not be available on the move.

Messages are read out, you can't read them on the screen, you can only reply by voice as well. You can't view email, facebook etc.

google maps, pocket casts, spotify, tune in radio these all work, you can ask google things like "find me the nearest italian restaurant" very much worthwhile

I get worried when I see drivers in an animated discussion with their passenger, waving their hand about.

To me, you don't have to be on the phone to be distracted

I've never heard of anyone transferring a licence but can it not be activated by VCDS?

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm not really interested in Facebooking while driving but the better SatNav and voice functionality would be handy!

I think I'd now go for the larger Google phone with an adapter for Nav giving an extra screen

this is so much better. Press a button on thesteering wheel to activate voice control, or just say ok google. Just to repeat, you can not do facebook, twitter, google plus, instagram etc. All you can do is google maps, audio apps (like internet radio, google play music, podcast apps), and basic googling (what's the weather forecast, where is the nearest ATM/supermarket, restaurant etc).

All without the need to look at or touch your phone. The screen is so much better than a phone screen, it is tablet sized.

For me at my stage of life, looking down to study a map display in traffic is too much to feel comfortable.

Any competent HUD is my preference and a phone holder for the larger Google would work for me I suspect .

That is the side of it that I'm interested in... We often just like to "Road trip" off to areas where we are unfamiliar with, so being able to search for food, shops etc on the go would be handy.

we did it last month in Northern Ireland when searching for a restaurant. It shows the options on a map and when you click on each one it gives you options to navigate to them, call them, even shows you their opening hours. You can also do this when on a trip, you can search along the route for the nearest pterol station, supermarket etc and it will tell you how much each one willa dd to your journey time. All without the need to touch your phone.

Great info, thank you very much!

and once waze is ok on it it will be great. What I want is a cabled phone holder that I can use so as to make connection/disconnection easier

I wouldn't have the situation where I couldn't take the device inside for touring planning purposes as opposed to simply quick efficient planning of an inbuilt.

I like to see the inbuilt for other purposes ICE HVAC fuel cons etc also

Does a conventional satnav work okay with a heated windscreen? I remember some time ago reading that satnav's etc. don't work well because of the heatoing elements in the glass screening out signals.

Others have reported there are no problems.

I had a Ford with heated windscreen years ago, and the conventional satnav took and extra minute or so to get a signal, but once it had done that it was fine. I guess it will depend on the efficiency of the in-built antenna - It also wasn't a Bluetooth enabled satnav, so there was no assisted-GPS like many are now which helps the initial startup.

The windscreen heater elements are very low down on the window, I don't have any issue with my phone GPS and that's attached to the middle front vents.

I haven't seen the Yeti heated screens, as I don't have one :envy:  But the Ford ones used to run vertically across the screen, they were very fine, but also close together - I guess the technology has moved on now.

Good question and one I didn't think about when I specced it for my latest Yeti! I'll check it out and report back.

That's not so on mine. The elements cover almost the entire screen.
