Variable Service Now Due...Service Book Says August

Hello, I'm after some advice please...

I have a 10 plate 1.2 on 76k. It was last serviced at 68k in August 2015. The computer says it is due a service, (and in 2k miles time) the service book says August 2017. It is on variable servicing, confirmed via the service book front page and the oil on all services is the variable oil...

I know its a matter of opinion...but should I get it serviced now? (can it wait till August?) Thinking of a major as the plugs don't seem to be done since 40k. Also, my milage is around 8k a year now (90% motorway)...should I change to annual servicing? Trying not to be too tight but don't want to spend out loads if I can help it.

Variable services is UP TO 18K miles or two years. Depending on oil quality it can be Less. If it wants a service it needs it.

I always prefer fixed servicing as I do less than 10K a year and don't like to run any longer than that on one oil change.

thanks, it's had the castrol stuff...just wasnt sure the computer thinks its on fixed but the regime is variable...my other cars have been variable, e.g. you could drive "hard" and see the service miles go down rapidly...

Or rather incorrectly. The Audi dealer managed to set my dad's old A3 to 10K miles and 2 years.

THe Service book may say August 2017 simply to show that this is the date if the Variable system hasn't warned you before then.

thanks everyone, looks like I'll go for a major service from an indy @ £260  :x ah well :-) (local dealership wanted the same but not for parts - wtf!)

What is the Independent doing, and what was the Dealer quoting for.

Oil & Filter, plug Air Filter & Pollen or not, is the Brake Fluid being changed, the fluids checked and topped up, hinges lubed, 

tyres and wipers checked, look see at brakes and steering, exhaust and a report.

Maybe a road test maybe not.

(Vacuum and wash at a main dealership.)

 

If no parts at a main dealer what are they charging £107 or so an hour for 2 hours and VAT.

indy (VW specialist recommended on here) quoted for oil, filter, plugs and all the checks, dealer will do oil and filter and checks but if anything is needed will be extra...my first time with VAG stuff, so it's all new to me, usually had a service plan or similar with my old (read: new cars) but times are hard :D

Something wrong there with the Main Dealership quote.  Dishonesty being the major thing.

That really would be cheeky charging the Major Service / Inspection Service cost to do a Minor Service and then also add on the parts to the Major Service charge.

 

But some are robbing barstewards if allowed to be.

Some actually do spark plugs now with a major service at no extra cost where they used to take an addition £100 plus.

that is correct ^ carry out a minor service for major service prices but adding extras in. When I questioned the price, the lady of the phone said they check the plugs. I know the plugs change colour and the electrode bit wears, but come on, a major service is a change of parts, surely?!?!? - I am tempted to double check it but....do they deserve the business?

And if taking out plugs they may as well change them.

 

Next time ask the Lady on the phone where she did her Training and does she often go in with the Technicians and watch them.

Not necessarily, no. Some plugs now have a 50k or even 100k expectancy. Don't know if that applies to the Yeti though.

OME more like 40,000 miles and some in TSI need changed at half that, and now there are Main Dealers changing plugs at a Major Service.

'Needed or not', and that is due to ones in 1.4 TSI / TFSI's failing and even in 1.2 TSI.

I've never got to the stage of needing to remove a coil-on-plug sparkie. I assume that requires a delicate touch as apposed to the simple big ones .
