Kwik Fit- wrong oil used- advice

Featured Replies

I had the same nonsense with my last Petrol S60 which had a newer replacement engine in.

Volvo Owners manual was saying one thing, Volvo main dealer another, my mate who is one of the best mechanics there is anyplace and who main dealers use when they are needing a specialist said totally different.

So there was 0w 30 FS, 0w 40 FS, 5w 30 FS all to Volvo spec so i thought stuff this and i used ASDA 5w 40 FS to Volvo spec and it was happy as Larry.

Older car, used engine and no idea what has been in it anytime in the past so a suitable oil was good enough.

It's ridiculous isn't it!?

Took me a while searching around to find the right oil for my mums smart car with all the different MBxxx approvals for different engines. I seem to think that needed a low 0Wxx kind of oil too.

All these different grades and manufacturer approvals etc.

Luckily like I said up to this last service at Kwik Fit it's been done at a Saab specialist so I'm pretty confident they will have used the right oil so a few thousand miles on the wrong viscosity oil shouldn't have done any damage.

For engine, bores, bearings, valves, seals etc there is that issue and thank goodness most engines are not made of chocolate,

sadly when Ford owned Volvo they were,

the whole oil and coolant confuses cause so many issues. ie OAT or HOAT and all that stuff.

As to Catalytic Converters & DPF's , Petrols / Diesels, needs low ash and that cr4p is exactly why 'Oil Confusion' helps nobody other than 'Garages / repairers'.

It is a farce.

Just got off the phone with the regional manager.

As I suspected... they are not willing to budge!

He has spoken with Fuchs and they say it's the right oil for the car.

I told him that going but the workshop manual and advice from Saab specialists the oil must be 0W40 and conform to Dexos 2 which the Fuchs oil does not:

I have ordered a bottle of Mobil 1 ESP and will be changing it regardless.

Not sure whether to pursue Kwik Fit any further or just leave it as I can't be bothered with the stress of it at the moment!

Our Pugs both (both DI) need 0W30 or 0W20

5W30 is nothing special these fast moving times

Confused.

A Current owner of a vehicle has no contract with a Company the previous Owner or Keeper used.

The previous Keeper might have requested a company to use a certain oil.

You need to ask the previous owner or keeper or whoever what happened, but really it is their business not the new owners.

All new owners can ever do is Service Vehicles as they want to once they own them or are the keeper, unless leasing or the likes and there are T&C's.

I suspect its not your fight to have, its the previous owner. Probably not worth the stress anyway, as long as there was something sloshing around in there to wash heat away from the bearings it will be fine :-)

Get the right oil in it now and enjoy!

And I guess a message to all to avoid Kwik-fit, if only for their butchery of spelling!

^^^^^ rite on

Id just change the oil & filter yourself Phil,it not worth the stress & hassle,i wouldnt let Kwik fit mend a punchure on my wheel barrow never mind carry out mechanical repairs on a car.

Yeah thank for your advice folks.

I suspect you are correct about the fight really being with the previous owner.

But I lack the desire to fight any further. Can't be bothered with the stress.

New oil filter picked up from ECP and Mobil 1 oil ordered on ebay for £35.

Don't think I'll bother with a flush. Might change the oil now then do it in 4-5k miles as planned too.

I made it very clear that I would never take my custom to Kwif Fit if they are prepared to put the wrong oil in cars and not consider the fact that their system might be wrong.

He didn't seem too interested and just waffled out about the seminars about oil he's been on and his 25 years experience in the motor industry and using thinner oil in his supercharged motorbike blah blah.

I guess he missed the point where he's dealing with a customer and their property then?

Not a lot you can do - contract is between KF and the previous owner. I doubt the previous owner is going to be happy to chase KF up for you.

Change the oil and forget about it. At least it has confirmed KF's reputation for you...

Yeah I once took the Octavia for an aircon recharge there. They were pretty good actually and booked it straight in.

Really made a difference as the performance was getting poor.

Won't even give them any custom ever again!

Their attitude of "our computer says this so you must be wrong" just stinks. No interest in exploring whether or not their information was wrong. I even offered to give him the number for the Saab specialist and he had zero interest.

There are more than enough unknowing clients around as far as they are concerned, it seems.
