BWA cam-chain and tensioner replacement

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I'm in due to do timing belt service on my BWA engine and I'm thinking about to do camshaft chain and tensioner replacement at same time.

Do someone has experience with it and how much does it cost?

Skoda usually have fixed prices for timing belts including water pump AFAIK in region of £485. They may also price match independents within a certain radius.

I'm not sure I understand the comment about the camshaft chain and tensioner. The main timing is a belt hence your first question.  There may be a chain for some other component like the oil pump but it wouldn't ordinarily be replaced as maintenance?

I think this engine may have a belt for one of the cams, and a chain for the other. Bit odd but there you go! To the OP, if there is a bit of a diesel sound at idle esp. from outside, I'd replace the chain and tensioning system. If not, I'd leave it as it should in theory be good for the life of the engine.

Every day is a learning day.  Timing chains and tensioners that need replacing on the EA113 too!

Not sure if these parts in this mk5 forum are for the AXX or BWA engine designation, but expect that many are interchangeable (should check though). Sounds very expensive if you do the camshaft adjuster as well, as the part is nearly £500!

Otherwise, per post, tensioner, chain, sealant and 2.5 labour maybe about £400-£500 depending on whether you use the pricey VAG sealant. More if using a skoda dealer labour rates, as I don't think there is fixed price listing for this job.
