Hi all at Briskoda. Having been a former member of the forum and owned a Yeti, Octavia and an Fabia in the past, I am Iooking to return to a Suberb. At the moment in a Mazda 6 diesel, a great car but the time to change is due. The Superb is the 1.4tsi act not sure saloon or estate yet. I am hoping that someone on the forum has towed with this engine. I have a small-ish caravan and fully laden its about 1270kg. I know a diesel would pull better but I really only do about 6000 miles a year or so, and hence concerned about the usual problems with low mileage diesels. I have checked the technical stuff and know the Superb will pull my van within its limits, but before maiking a choice I am hoping there are members out there who have towed with the 1.4 and can tell me whats its like, and any additional useful info!

Cheers if anyone can help

Cant comment on the towing performance of the 1.4TSI, however i cant see it been a problem, more so as it may not be often you are towing and when you do just take it easy.

The car has enough weight and power, mpg may not be the best but for 95% of the time the car will tick all boxes for day to day use...

As a kid we had a caravan and my dads non turbo petrol cars always did a good job.

In 1993 I had a Rover 214 and towed a caravan heavier than the one I have now, which is approximately the same weight as yours. The car was on it's limit but managed just fine.

We are now over 20 years on and with the improvements in engines and technology and the fact that the Superb is a light car for it's dimensions I seriously doubt you would have a problem with it. The only other factor is whether you would have manual or DSG. I have always preferred to tow with a manual for better control and I like the extra torque diesels provide for all forms of driving hence my choice of car but would not have been concerned by using a 1.4, manual or DSG.

I used to tow a race car on a covered transporter weighing just over 1200kg  with a Golf GTi with just 112 PS and 113 torques. It was fine for about 7 years. The Golf was lighter than the Superb but the overall fully loaded power to weight ratio of the Superb is higher and the torque to weight ratio (and its the torque you use when towing) is a great deal better.

Don't tow currently, don't even have the transporter but if I had to I would be confident the Superb would do the job.

I tow a 1100kg (official max weight) caravan with the 1.4 TSI 140hk DSG (albeit in an Octavia).

It tows just fine, although it got a bit warm last year going uphill Kassel in Germany at 100km/h in 35C ambient temperature...
