Can changing coilspring bugger the steering rack?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

Took my 06 octavia 4x4 estate for MOT and service this week and the garage said it had a broken NSF coilspring which needed replacing. Fair enough.

Got it back and 10 yards down the road the power steering light came on red and beeping and the power steering failed. Managed to get it back to the garage who don't have a clue what's wrong and have just suggested fitting a new steering rack.

I'm feeling a bit miffed at having to fork out for this having delivered them a working car and not had one back. is it possible to damage the steering rack when changing a coilspring? Does anyone have any other ideas what could be wrong as I can definitely see the rack being changed and it not being resolved.

Thanks in advance

no reason  to it so someones slipped up or just bad luck   needs the code read to find out exactly what the registered fault is  before throwing money at it

00573 steering torque sensor apparently

Something the garage did imo. Its not the rack but something associated with the sensor. Fuse, wiring, connector, or buggered sensor. Try to reset the fault first.

00573 - Steering Torque Sensor (G269): Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms

Steering Assist not working

Possible Causes

Steering Assist Power Supply (Terminal 15) faulty

Wiring/Connectors from/to Steering Torque Sensor (G269) faulty

Steering Torque Sensor (G269) faulty

Possible Solutions

Check Steering Assist Power Supply (Terminal 15)

Check Fuse(s)

Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Steering Torque Sensor (G269)

Check Steering Torque Sensor (G269)

Special Notes

When found in VW Golf (1K) Steering Assist (and similar), check Steering Torque Sensor (G269)

Why would they want to change the rack when they don't know what's wrong. Me thinks scam is going on.

Makes sense to me as well, I broke offside front spring and had it replaced with no issues at my Indy

If you are disassembling suspension parts on the front of the car which is attached the the steering rack via the track rod it wouldn't be impossible to damage the steering rack but I imagine you would have to have a fairly large gorilla with a large hammer to manage it.

Guessing here.

Could it be the original spring broke because the top bearing was seized (winding the spring when steering)?. With a new spring fitted (maybe with the steering turned to lock) and a seized top bearing the rack is working extra hard during steering winding the spring, triggering over torque error.

Check the top bearing(s).

This makes a lot of sense, maybe an idea would be to lift front wheels of ground and turn steering by hand. That would be a good indicator of a seized mount and you would see the spring turning.
