Strange Noise Of Throttle Lift-off

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

My 41k mile Octavia vRS seems to have developed a strange noise.

When I lift of the throttle (normally for a gearchange but doesn't need to be) I hear a kinda phuta-phuta-phuta noise like air forcing itself out of something.

Could it be the dump valve. It's quite noticable with the window down but I can't really tell what side it's coming from.

Car seems to be driving okay.

Thanks in advance.

probably just your passengers sighing with relief! ;):D

seriously though it could be just the dump vavle, have you checked all pipes from the valve are secure, there may be a leak?

Cheers

Dave,

does this only happen on gear changes? Do you have a loss in power as well?

You can hear the standard DV venting but only if there is minimal external noise....should be on the left hand side.

I occassionally hear a fluttering noise which is the wastegate....apprarently. This is bad if you hear fluttering all the time.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Sounds similar to the noise my (stock) DV was making when it had a split diaphragm.

I've noticed the sound whenever I lift off the throttle when moving. There seems to be no sound when revving the engine while at a standstill.

Tried it this morning on a straight 40 mph section by pushing the throttle down and then lifting off after a second or two. With the window down the sound was quite a noticable phutta like air escaping. I remeber the dump valve normally sounding more psssht and I can't hear that sound anymore.

I'll check the pipes at lunchtime.

Probably knackered DV......split diaphragm like Mike says.

Okay. Sounds likely. Thanks guys.

Doesn't seem to be affecting the peformance yet. But that might be on the way when the part fails completely.

Couple of questions:

Do these often fail on non-chipped cars?

Should I take it to a dealer for another OEM valve or get an aftermarket one?

I don't know about often, but they certainly do fail on non-chipped cars (and not just vRSs) - mine failed before the car went to Jabba for a remap.

The OEM valve is perfectly adequate (even after a remap), but it does seem to be prone to breaking. If you don't want to shell out on a Forge or Bailey one, there are some versions (IIRC Bosch ones, OEM on Porsches) which seem to be more reliable.

The standard DV will fail...standard or remapped. I believe the latest OEM ones a better but they still do not provide the response of an after market one.

This is purely down to the OEM using a diaphragm as opposed to a piston.

OEM only costs around

Okay, it's booked in to the dealer for a "diagnostic".

Best to find out what going wrong before I do anything and I don't want I failing on my way to Edinburgh a week on saturday.

Thanks again guys.

Grumble, grumble.

Diagnostic found diverter valve at fault.

Grumble, grumble.

None in stock and even if they did no workshop slots left this week.

Grumble, grumble, moan.

Apparently won't harm car's performance.

Dealers I dunno. Over an hour of work lost today so they could tell me what I already told them.

I don't know if a faulty DV won't harm performance....surely if the diaphragm splits then boost won't be held properly and will result in a loss of power??

I think the OEM DVs are around

For the record, my Jabba fitted Bailey DV goes "perchew" which I prefer to "psstt" ;)

saw a skyline in town a few weeks back - he accelerated away for about 50 yards before changing up - the bl00dy DV was louder than my vRS!!!!

Update:

Just back from Renshaw and Newsome. New dump valve fitted under warranty.

Noise has gone away, car feels are little more responsive too.

Job done.
