Idle speeds

Featured Replies

My new 1600 diesel Octavia with stop/start, has two or three idle speeds ranging from 800 to approx 1300 rpm. I have taken it in to the dealers who say "they all do that Sir."  Turning the stop start off makes no difference.  It is quite difficult to drive in some corners as the car is still pulling at times.  Has anybody else had this problem or any ideas welcome

Mine initially runs at about 1100 rpm but settles down once its warm. My mk2 vrs diesel never did this just the MK3.

mine idles around 800 unless regen in process & then around 1000rpm

The idle speed will vary on all modern engines.

It is around 800rpm when the engine is hot & warmed-up & there are no external interactions occuring.

If the engine temperature is cold the idle is increase a few hundred rpm and will vary based on temperature (decreasing as the engine warms up).

Activating air-conditioning in summer can also automatically increase idle the 100 or 200 rpm to help improve the compressor output.

If the vehicle is moving the idle speed is also increase by 100rpm or so

The same if you begin to release the clutch when stationary, the idle speed increases to improve pull-away performance & prevent stalling.

When the engine is trying to regenerate the DPF it can increase the speed to 1000rpm also.

However, idling at 1300rpm is a bit strange for me. (it shouldn't be much more than 1000rpm unless the engine temperature is well into the double digit minus values)

What does your engine coolant & oïl show on the maxi-dot when it is idling this high?

If you tap the Accelerator pedal does the idle speed decrease ?

Did you check that the carpet Under the pedal is not interferring in any way?

If you can capture a picture of the idle at 1300rpm the dealer should really look at this & at least read the error codes.

You perhaps have a faulty coolant temperature sensor which is read very very cold.

Mine does exactly the same, bit difficult to get your head around at first, but 4 months in and I've got used to it. Like you at first I thought it was faulty. Certainly noticed it more on the cold mornings.

Don't have that engine, but one gear lower required maybe?

Many thanks for your replies - especially Gabbo- yes I have checked the carpet.  If I tap the accelerator than sometimes the revs go up and then stay there - if the problems were consistent then I could drive round the problem a bit but they are not - sometimes the revs are low and then high and it is this that catches me out at times.  But because the problems are intermittent the dealer says they cannot trace the problem.  They have checked the error codes and they are all clear.  I had a diesel Superb before and never had this problem - not sure I will keep this car if not fixed - shame really.

I have this problem with my new VRS 230, but like you, it's intermittent. I always switch off start/stop, and the rev problem only occurs when I'm stationary, revving between approx 1200/1600, up and down, up and down. I've checked all the good things like sticking accelerator, but no good. It's done it about 5 times since new in September. My plan now, is the next time it happens, I'll film it on my phone. To be continued..............
