Who's a sill-y boy then

I made a bit of a boo boo when jacking up the rear today.  :swear:

Did the jack slip??? or did you jack in the wrong place?

Ouch!! It'll look worse when clean!! I had to help my next door neighbour last week. He was changing the front pads in his Audi TT when the standard scissor jack split almost in half!! Thankfully he wasn't underneath and had the good sense to place his spare wheel under the car. I talked him into purchasing a good trolley jack and axle stands.

Goes to show you should never play with car jacks without a responsible adult present

Ouch, gutted for you.

Looks like the jack was positioned way too far back, should be where the triangle is in the sill where you open the door, somewhere close to what looks like the thumbprint in the muck. It's only there that the sill is reinforced.

The standard jack does not put any weight on the sill.  The sill is only used for location to prevent the jack slipping - the car's weight is taken by the jack contacting a 'pad' behind the sill.  The sill is NOT reinforced.

It's crazy that the car's door has to be open before the location marker is visible.

Many Octavia's are damage by garages and tyre fitters insisting that the sill is the correct place to place the jack.

i would say it would pull out ok but would need a small bodyshop repair.

around 150 to 200 quid at a guestimate

When I got my 2011 vRS, it had damaged sills along both sides. I don't think from a jack, could of been lifted or the car grounded. It was not as quite severe as the damage in the photo but spread out over a larger area.

I had a body shop pull them out the best they could without requiring repainting and re-finishing. Cost about £400 for both sides and that wasn't from a premium all bells and whistles with coffee and biscuits and leather sofa waiting area bodyshop.

The body shop said it was a pretty hard job and the end result on my car is not perfect (especially on on side) but a lot better than before hand. You have to really look now but up close there are undulations left.  He said he could get it perfect but would need re-finishing and more cost.

I dread taking the car to tyre places.  The just use massive jacks with a massive pad contact area but literally put it anywhere.  They have cracked the undertray last time I had a tyre repair done and I really don't want them to damage the sills further.  Trouble is they seem to be the same everywhere!!

I mention to the fitter where to jack the car up if i have to venture to a place like this, ive walked out of a few places when they get a bit arsey about jacking up on a sill because its easier, ive even seen places use a 4 pot car lift and just put two under the front side of the car and lift it up like that to change wheels :crying:
