Need some help with Auto box

Hi guys, bought a 05 55 1.9 PD 130 Auto Superb Elegance on a whim knowing that it needed some work and TLC.  One of the main issues is that the car is stuck in limp mode (all the gear selection on the dash is lit), i did the simple thing before of changing the filter and putting in fresh oil but after clearing the codes with my Snap On Solus that the code will not clear.  The code I am getting is 18222/P1814 - Pressure Control Valve 1 (N215) Open/Short to Ground.  After looking around on Google, there are a few things to look at which are:

  • The solenoid in buggered
  • The wiring had a break in it
  • The TCM unit is goosed

From what i have read, the water ingress on the passenger footwell is fairly common and cause havoc with the TCM and would point to the issues i have as the passenger side footwell is damp and the car has been sat for a while and is clear that water is getting into the cabin.  My plan is to take the unit out and inspect it and go from there but i just wanted to know am i going about this the right way or is there something else i can look at.  Also if it is the TCM, how do i fix it?  Any help and guidance would be great.

If you are in a RHD UK car (are you?) the TCM is in driver side footwell.  It is always in the right hand side footwell.

Skoda and VW ERWIN for Passat and Superb has a lot of information about diagnosing the gearbox.  If you want to work on these it is worth spending the few euros it costs to download all the relevant PDF files, you will have them for good then.

Check both sides front and back under the carpet for dampness those issues could be related to corrosion in the wiring and/or damage to the TCM.

Cheers guys, damp is an understatement, like a mini lake.  Took the TCM casing out and it was full of water and when i took the unit out and took a closer look the unit had been tampered with before so the previous owners knew what was wrong.  I was looking around yesterday at options and found 2 thing i could do, get a replacement from Germany for £220 or get the current unit repaired by ECU Repairs for £250.  I was going to get the one from Germany but rang around some breakers on fleebay and found one for £150 including p+p with 14 day warranty, so going to try that and see if it works and hopefully will have some good news on the next update.

If the multiplugs have been wet for significant periods of time you'll probably have ongoing issues with connections becoming intermittent, even if you replace the module itself.  You might want to look into techniques for trying to clean up the terminals in the wiring loom.

Read the water ingress thread sticky at the top of the page from start to finish all of these cars let in water, dry out the car thoroughly, there will be a lot of water in there and if the car is 11-12 years old and the fix was never done or done poorly then the car has been wet for a long time so the wiring/multiplugs will have corrosion as jimbof says above, do a proper job or it will be an ongoing nightmare.

Thanks guys, had to move the car before and plugged the original unit back in before and the gearbox started to shift through the gears fine.  I think with the combination of TCM and plug drying out that its started to work properly.  I'm at my friend's garage tomorrow so i'm going to wet vac the carpet to get as much water out and use a blow heater to dry out the interior while i work on the outside.

Yeah, i read the pinned post last night so im going to work on those things as well tomorrow and will get some pictures as i do.

Well I've been busy over the past few days, here is some pics of the car as I bought it:

As you can see the NSF spring has snapped and is a little low.  I ordered a new set of H&R springs from Euro and got them swapped over, I haven't got a pic of it lowered yet as I've not washed it so will get it done tomorrow.

Yesterday, I decided to buy a new pollen filter housing as I didn't know how bad the seal was on the original one, the seal was broken but not too bad:

I cleaned up around the inlet and sealed it with some strong sealant.  I did the same with the ECU housing as it was soaked and was much needed.  I then lifted the passenger side carpet up too tackle the common wiring issue and was given a quarter of a mop buckets worth of water:

I mopped up whatever I could and left the heater inside the cabin so I could gradually tackle the water ingress.  I then started working on the wiring:

I bought some copper tube crimps from toolstation and redid all of the connections and put some heat shrink on them.  I now have all the electrics working inside the cabin which makes a pleasant change.

The passenger window mechanism was shot so that got replaced and now works a treat.  I gave the car a full service, got a new bumper insert for the bumper and a new battery as the original was goosed.  The hazard switch needs replacing and there is an issue with the lights and not too sure if it's a relay as the when I was dealing the ECU inlet, there was evidence of water residue on the relay box.

I came out this morning and the car went back into limp mode which annoyed me like anything so I decided to park the car up and get the seat out and lift the carpet.  I took the TCM out and got the mop out, again:

I've left the heater on and will leave the dehumidifier if for the night and will rebuild it all back up in the morning and hopefully all will be good.
