DSG fill for life?

Featured Replies

Just been in touch with my local, very reputable VAG specialist in Nottingham. My 62 VRS estate DSG has done 74,000m so I was going to get the DSG box oil and filter changed.

Garage informs me the box could be fill for life. Now I have never heard of ANY DSG boxes being "fill for life", anyone shed any light on this?

Fish.

I thought it was every 40,000 miles

Could depend on the definition of 'life'.  It's usually not your life (four score and ten years), but component life. If the manufacturer expects something to last for three years, then that's 'life'.

Whoever you spoke to has no idea, so ask to talk to someone that does.  Also talk to this persons boss that gives out the wrong info.

The 6 speed wet clutch DSG do has a Service Schedule for Oil & Filter change.

(7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch 'DQ200' DSG do not have a Service Schedule or need Oil changed, that is unless part of the World Wide Recall which is a Service Campaign in Europe because Europe is no in The World.)

PS

Well reputed but maybe wrongly so,  do you want to name them in case others are getting a bum steer.

This is correct. OP it wouldn't fill me with confidence if a "reputable VAG specialist" didn't know that an Octavia VRS had the wet dsg box. The dry one -which doesn't have an official service interval - is only fitted to the smaller, lower power engines due to the low torque limitation of the box.

Well they do get fitted to ones with 192ps like the VW Polo GTI 1.8tsi (but then VW say they have only 250Nm)

There was the same 7speed DSG in the 1.4 TSI / TFSI Twnchargers 132-136 kw (250Nm) but as you say, Low Power Engines....

& plenty around in cars remapped and putting out in excess of 220ps.

Not relevant though to this OP / thread. Just so that people know the facts, like the Employee at the Very Reputable VAG Specialist.

+1. It is. Or 4 years they say but I tend to follow the mileage for the DSG box.  I would be doing it ASAP. It is DIYable but quite a bit of faffing for the money saved.  There are a number of detailed guides on the web with pics.

Skoda fixed pricing is usually about £170-£180 and independents not much less (sometimes more!).  I did it myself but genuine DSG Oil plus filter and O-ring is circa £100.  Don't let them change only the oil without the filter, as that seems to be happening quite a bit. It is only half the job and at 74k miles I'd be doing both.

The original garage I spoke to was Lion VAG Specialists in Nottingham not too far from where I live.

I have subsequently spoken to Wings Skoda Peterborough close to where I work and upon giving them my VIN I have been informed that my DSG box does indeed have a service interval of 40,000 miles. It has been booked in for later on this month.

Thanks for all of your help guys.

Yes, it is a poor show and advice from the first garage.  You ask the question and an incorrect answer is thrown back at you suggesting it might be for life.... Thankfully, you weren't fully convinced, although your schedule is a bit late.....

AFAIAK there are only two variants so even a question back to you about whether the box is 7SP or 6SP should of allowed the first garage to provide the proper advice without even checking VINs etc etc.!!

Ok lim now confused

my car is a 2011 octavia vrs cr . When I do a google search it says it's a 7 speed gearbox and doesn't need a oil change as it's a sealed unit,:@:@

Nothing to be confused at - wherever you searched will be wrong if it is a FL vRS it will be 6Sp.

At least the car looks very nice!  I've got a 2011, estate as well, in black magic though.

The Skoda web-site quotes a fixed price of £175 for the DSG oil and filter change.  My local Skoda dealer (Blade, Gloucester) initially quoted £205 but dropped to £175 when I pointed out the price stated on the Skoda web-site.   The local VAG specialist quoted £179 .

Il see what blade SKODA quote me next week.

I just noticed now. (even though I have posted in response), that the first guys you called that gave you the poor response was Lion Garage. Although, the response you got on the phone was a poor show, I used Lion in Hinckley to do my timing chain and tensioner when I first purchased the car used and the manger there was first class and very helpful. I even called him when I was picking up the car privately about a few faults before I handed over the £££.   They did a good job on the job and reasonably priced.  I would definitely recommend.

The group branches seemed quite closely linked and I heard another branch call the Hinckley branch I was in for a tricky diagnosis whilst I was picking up the car they seemed pretty on the ball.

They don't have fancy reception areas or receptionists, service advisors or the like and usually the manager is answering the phone and doing some supervising of jobs, so perhaps you got the apprentice answering the phone while he was tied up.  They should of been more careful with the response if unsure. Hopefully it will be a learning experience, if you call back, you should feedback as a small slip clearly reflects badly.

Hi The Client,

Where does it say it is 4 years or 60,000 kms ?  I am actually after this information as my car is 4 years old but has only done 35,000 kms and I am not 100% sure whether I do the DSG oil now or not .  Cheers.

Edit:  Should add that it is a DQ250 6 speed 2.0T petrol DSG VRS variant

Edited by stylo

It used to be widely publicised when I had a mk5 golf, the VW interval for 02E DQ250 was 40k miles / 4 years. Although, most practical approach was always to pay attention to the mileage limit.  I'm sure it was in the service booklet with car manuals then as well in the mk5. I no longer have the car and now in the skoda service booklet I have, just looked at it, it just says 60k km. It also looks like the reference to 4 years no longer appears on websites for VW anymore, so seems they've probably dropped the time limit.

Thanks again .. I just got home to look through my servicing manual and its got no mention at all about the DSG service. So annoying ... I'll accept the 60,000 km upper limit anyway.
