:-( I paid the scrappy
You can only transfer from car to car, motorcycle to motorcycle, and motorcycle to car, but not from car to motorcycle (easier to get an MOT on an old bike than on an old car).

I believe that might have been the case at one time but is certainly not the case now - http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/cherish.htm - "Motorcycles and mopeds can participate fully in the number transfer arrangements, providing they meet all the normal transfer requirements"

Bet the scrappy was rubbing his hands when it turn up Wonder how much it would have been worth today. Newreg.com have a search facility to see if a Reg No is still in circulation, First Registered, Place ect ect................Andy:)

Well I couldn't find the relevant section at that website but another reports U7 as being on "OTHER ITALIAN MAKES" whatever that means. However it's certain that the "scrappy" wouldn't have realised the profit owing to the lack of the crucial MOT - the DVLA would have reissued the number...

Here's the result after I guessed Ferrari:

The enquiry is complete

The vehicle details for U 7 are:

Date of Liability 01 05 1991

Date of First Registration 21 11 1985

Date of Last V5 Issue 23 05 1990

Year of Manufacture 1985

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 4350CC

CO2 Emissions Not Available

Fuel Type Petrol

Export Marker Not Applicable

Vehicle Status Unlicensed

Vehicle Colour RED

Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle

6 Months Rate £93.50

12 Months Rate £170.00

It most certainly is the case now! This extract is from the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association website.

Are There Any Special Rules For Motorcycles/Mopeds?

Yes, Motorcycles and mopeds can take part in the transfer and retention schemes, but there is a restriction. Numbers may be transferred between two-wheeled vehicles. They can also be transferred from two-wheeled vehicles to cars, HGVs etc. However, numbers from cars, HGVs, etc. cannot be transferred onto two-wheeled vehicles. The reasons for this restriction are linked to the control of abuse of the schemes.
