Headlight aim / bumper alignment???

Featured Replies

Both of my headlights are out of aim (bear with me please) and therefore my car has failed the mot.

This was due to someone reversing into me in a car park a short while back.

At the time it was noted that the bumper had been pushed a little but as everything worked the guys insurers offered me £500 which hopefully should cover any costs.

My question is, if the adjusters do not adjust enough to correct the alignment / aim, would the solution be bumper adjustment, or could it require further work / not much to do with the bumper???

Both headlights are about an inch low (mechanic said is a lot / noted internal height adjuster on 0) and both aim too far to the right.

Ideas welcomed.

Assuming the adjusters aren't able to correct it.

Then you'll need to take the headlights out and inspect the headlight carrier as something it mounts to will have been bent at a guess.

If you can find out what, you should be able to bend it back and hopefully fix the issue.

+1 per langers2k. It won't be the bumper it will be the metal work behind the bumper or more likely the framework around the lights or their carriers. It must of either 1) been a fair bit of force or 2) have impacted and pushed quite high up and across a wide area at the front of the vehicle to have impacted both headlights or their frames.

3rded; that or the bottom headlight mounts have been broken.

Yes, it was hit at about 45 degree angle from the left, just left of centre.

A little more on this and I meant to mention earlier............anyway

The headlights being out of aim was not a surprise, well the near side anyway, as I adjusted the headlight mount a little, after the bump, to better align with the bumper. Not the drivers side though.

Looking at the lights this afternoon the lens on the drivers side particularly, was way off centre, and upon checking the adjusters, the left/right one was all the way to the right. I thought it was broken at first but pushing it inside whilst adjusting it, it started moving. If the garage haven't done this then this will remain a mystery as to why it was all the way to the right.

I have used this garage for years now with both cars and generally trust them. Not sure why they didn't adjust them for me though, but fingers crossed as they adjust freely and I have put them back more centrally the garage will be able to correctly align them with little cost now, hopefully.
