Coolant overflow

Featured Replies

Hey guys

Someone topped up my coolant overflow the other day, not realising it's low sometimes when the engine is warm.

It's now way above the MAX mark which the manual says not to fill above. Should I look at removing some coolant from the reservoir?

I think you should remove it to it doesn't sit above the max line. That area above is for expansion of the coolant at temperature.

Can I ask something. My coolant was a little low so topped it up with around 100ml/150ml of water so it was within the range. Is this ok, as it wasn't G13? I read it's ok to top it up with a little bit of water as long as it isn't too much.

Should be OK as long as the concentration of coolant already in there wasn't already weak (I.e. Pale). Ideally should use distilled water also. If it drops again soon I'd query it as you shouldn't really lose any coolant.

The system will self regulate and spit out what it doesn't need even if the expansion tank is brimmed.

Leave it as it is and it will look after itself.

Just what I wanted to hear. Cheers James!

Where does it spit out? The cap does not have a relief valve.

Have a look at the bottle, you will see the outlet.

When my 2018 vrs was in the dealer the filled up my coolant to the seam way above max so this will slowly reduce itself ?

Usually it does.  Sometimes some cars will stay as they are at that level and not go down to MAX.

Keep an eye on the 'Cold level'  and please report back where it gets to after a few 'up to full running temperature' runs, and cooling downs.

Coolant is now down to just over max after just over 2 weeks of 60 miles a day during the week to work and back
