Petrol vrs V diesel vrs. DO NOT MENTION FUEL ECCOMOMY!

Featured Replies

Hi. Just swapped from a remapped cr diesel vrs to a tfsi. Interested to hear people's comparisons between the two without mentioning fuel eccomomy!  Lol

Diesel will probably be a bit easier on fuel... :)

Lol always one. Lol

Diesel is a more relaxed drive when you're not in a mood for driving like you stole it?

Always one, and it's usually me!! :D

You can't just disregard one aspect of a comparison though, it's like saying compare them without mentioning the the petrol is faster, it's meaningless... ;)

Thing is I have read tons of comparisons after a Google search and you can guarantee every one ends up being a discussion just on fuel eccomomy. I know it will be heaver on fuel, just wanted people's opinions on other aspects of the car.

Just noticed I havnt changed my avatar to new car! I'll do it now. Lol

You should be in the best position to compare and contrast having just made the swap.

How do YOU find things?

I had a 2007 VRS petrol (so TFSI - assuming you now have a TSI) and now a 2010 VRS 170 CR diesel.

Preference between the 2 seems to be very personal - in my case, I prefer pretty much every characteristic of a 'warm' performance petrol car over a diesel. I bought the CR for 2 reasons really; at the time, it looked like my job was going to change and I'd be commuting 100 miles each day so a diesel was the obvious choice (like many people I claim back my travel mileage, so even factoring in depreciation due to increased mileage I'd be quids in) - that gamble well and truly didn't pay off, I'm still working locally and the car has covered only a few thousand miles in 18 months :)

Secondly, the car was very well specified from new and was a one Briskoda owner car when I bought it - having been meticulously maintained and receiving a new set of tyres, cam belt, service and DSG change quite close to me taking it on - so my conclusion at the time was it was too good to pass up.

I'd swap it in a heartbeat for a TSI though - stick a stage 1 remap on it and be a happy man. I have considered swapping fleetingly but I'm basically too scared to risk getting rid of it and taking something unknown on!

The more practical side of me (tax, MPG, likelihood of driving like a loon) knows the diesel is the wisest option though, dammit.

Picking it up in the morning. You know what it's like when your getting a new car! Lol

If you're picking up a TFSI I assume it's a MkII Pre-FL. If so, check that to see if it's had any work done on G60 Teves ABS, cambelt and water pump, ABS sensor, wheel hubs and air conditioning.

Cambelt and water pump has been done.  What's teves?

Teves is the ABS controller.  A common and used to be, expensive repair.  Think there are more economic ways to deal with it now. On an mk2 pre FL it may have been attended to by now.

Ah right. Got a lot to learn comming from 4 diesel vrs's lol

I have owned  two petrol Octavia 2  vRS and one Diesel vRS

Real consumption 36 and 46 mpg maybe 49 but not enough to recommend it.

Go for a petrol they are much easier to drive and much more fun.

I'll do a full comparison tomorrow when I get home between my old remapped cr and new petrol tfsi. Picking it up from Southport and driving back to Wigan which if anyone knows it is a great road through Rufford. Can't wait!

I prefer the exhaust noise of the TFSi engine. I used to love the sound of my BCS exhaust. But I prefer the drive of the CR170 diesel and now it is mapped, has plenty of power for overtakes. In gear acceleration from my stage 1 TFSi to the stage 1 CR170 are marginal. Id favour the diesel for in gear acceleration but the petrol for off the mark. However I dont do traffic light grand prixs so that doesnt worry me.

Mikejay if you do the sums on the fuel consumption and the extra and increasing cost of Diesel fuel, extra cost of the Diesel car, DPF troubles you will see it is not worth having a Diesel.

I made the mistake of buying a Diesel after enjoying a 57 and a 62 Petrols

, the Diesel is a dog by comparison. There just is not enough extra torque to make the driving experience nice.

The TFSI can use a lot of oil my old one used a 1 litre every two months and i was only doing 250 miles a month,

nice power through the rev range in the TFSI all the way to the red line,

my down sides were poor fuel economy, very high road tax, burning oil,

i sold it and bought a pd vrs very happy with this .

Both cars should run on super diesel/unleaded so the fuel cost will be the same
