Do Shark do an STS kit for your vehicle? It might cost a little more (though once you factor in the 4 hour round trip maybe not) and it means you can do it at home, and remove it at any time if needed.

They do mate.  I wasn't planning on taking the map off so never considered it seriously.  Do you mean instead of going to them, they send out the map and device for you to do it yourself?

  • I think a new set of coil packs is not a bad idea, especially with your occasional misfire issue. Doesn't have to be the R8 ones but they do seem to get a good response.  I'd say coil packs is a wiser

The problem with that though (IMO) is that they don't do any real testing etc.  It's a case of 'flash and play' (errrrr, that sounds very rude...). Surely if you go to them, they'll check the car out, rolling road it before and after, and adjust? How can any of this done if they just post you a box with the map on it?

The stage 1 map is a generic map......just like the standard map is a generic map ;)
Its set up to work well within the tolerances of the vehicle, but is not custom built for every individual engine (Although I believe is adjusted depending on engine code/version). Had mine done at Shark HQ but without the RR session, just a road test to check there were no issues and the map had worked ok as far as I saw. It did over 100k Miles on that map without any faults or replacement parts, and gave much more 'oomph' and better MPG when being sensible, would happily do it again. :)

Awesome thanks. I thought there was more to it than that.  Maybe the STS would be more suitable for me after all...

I went for the STS so I didn't have to drive. Also I will re-use the STS on the next car making sure I remove the map from my old car first as you get a discount too.

Hi,

Been talking to Shark today about doing stage 1 on my car post emissions 'fix'. Seat leon 1.6 Tdi here but just popped in here for some advise on Shark.

It's a choice at the moment between local custom remap or shark map... hoping to get it sorted this Friday as I'm off work.

Take it people seem to rate Shark then?

Shark are a site sponsor and in the last 5 years I have had no trouble with the map on my pd105. Thumbs up from me

What about Campbells tuning in Marske?  They will do a before and after dyno and ensure the car is fit to be tuned along with rectify any issues found prior to mapping.

Hovering over the shark sts buy button, as they have 25% off...

If I keep the sts device and remove the map, can you transfer the map to another car in the future?

Ideally I'd prefer to go down to SHQ in Mansfield, but it's a 5 hour round trip :(

You cant swap the map, the STS will allow you to clear faults on the new car, but you will need to pay for and download a new map for a different car.

Got you.   Shark is a way away, so I think I'll go for the STS option.  It may be generic and not perfectly tuned for my car, but I it'll be far from a bodge job.  Many people use these 'remote' options with success.

That is me. I live miles away so it worked for me. You also get an immobiliser setting where even you with your key cannot start the car

I'd stop hovering and go for it.  A decent remap transforms the car and makes it so much better to drive. As long as you're happy with the results (& remember to tell your insurance company) then it's a positive move that makes your driving experience that bit nicer.

How much did it add (a stage 1 map) to insurance following the full disclosures route?

I'm 30, and my documents say £446, but I was charged £496, so that reminds me I need to double check that I think the difference is for protected NCD, but the documents say that £446 is inclusive of that.  I renewed in March, so I've no chance of getting that £50 back now.

That's for the Octavia with suspension and remap included.

That doesn't seem bad at all if both mods included. Who's that with out of interest for my next renewal. Did you declare and pay for mods that weren't yet fitted?

Chris Knott.  They price matched AF so I stuck with them as their service has been spot on.  Sadly my premium is still high as I'm in a high risk area (worst post code band apparently). Yes, it was easier to just declare the mod in advance; with AF, it was bizarrely cheaper to have the suspension AND the remap, than it was for just the remap.  CK actually charged me nothing for the suspension (under 25mm drop) so I've only been charged for the remap; I really need to ring them up and enquire about the difference.

Yes, OK. Already use them. A little cheaper than you but I had to push them and I'm older - Mid 40s.

The £40 is the extra they add on to all premiums for legal cover, you can't have their policies without it apparently so when comparing use the total price!

I guess that makes sense. This is what my docs say:

Total.png.80c30e6e0ea674866917db840030a23f.png

What is the cost of using a credit card? Is it ~£12? The total that came off my account was £502 plus a few pennies.

Their T&Cs say 1.5%, I paid by debit card so it is not charged. Your c card charge sounds more like 3% but even that is not ridiculous. Keep your eye on it next time, prob not worth chasing for £5 or £6, maybe something slightly different on your policy cw mine. The underwriter is different for me but C Knott charging and T&Cs shouldn't change.

That makes sense.  Phook it, going to order the STS map now :)

Looking forward to hearing your post stage 1 synopsis soon!:)
