They already do; it's called "business rates".

I was replying to Xavier's post where he said:

they're talking about charging companies for allowing people to park as an extra kind of tax (!!)

That would be over and above what they charge for "business rates", and the point I was making is they they've been talking about adding thios extra charge for over 40 years - and still haven't got off their BTMs and done it - maybe they realise that it could make employers look to relocate outside Reading?

It is intended to:
- reduce rush-hour congestion and air pollution on Reading’s roads by incentivizing a shift to more sustainable methods of transport; bus, bike, car-share and walking

What about those who live many miles outside Reading where there is no credible (financially and time-wise) option other than a private car?

I used to live 35 miles from Reading when I was working there, and using public transport would not only have been financially crippling but also take about 4 hours each way and hence double the working day.

Given that many commuters cannot afford to live in the towns where they work they have to live some distance away, so I believe we need to accept that commuting using personal transport is a necessity and work out how to make it possible instead of trying to demonise it.

Or if they have not already done get their 'Park & Ride' system fit for purpose with plenty free parking out of the city, EV charging points there and low emissions shuttle service to the City for workers and shoppers and visitors commuting in.

Reading has a couple of P&R, one at Winnersh, the other just south of J11 of the M4. Something like £3.50 parking for the day with the shuttle bus. A few charging points too, but pretty expensive and often out of order according to Zapmap.

I take it the councils expect you to recharge away from home..........?

Charging at home makes the most sense for those that can. It's during a time when electricity is in abundance / cheap and a long period of time allowing a more spread energy consumption. If only I could! And when you can't, I really wish the council would offer support for those that want a charger installed in a public place / not directly fed off their home meter.

There's ample parking where I live and it would be so easy to have a charge point installed. But no, "not interested and no budget" when I campaigned for it :(

Whats up with Reading, can they not go get EU funding like other places do and use the UK Government grants and the other assistance available,

what is it that Reading Council likes spending money on?

Expecting there will be much more EV Charging near the Dundee Waterfront & train station soon.

Look at 3.50 mins, is this Car Displays?? Or for draining water out of Skoda doors?

*City of Discovery, where GTA was invented, where the new V&A is being built and they keep spending even if others need to provide the money to fund things.*

Very much so, especially the more essential services... Like to see them cope without water if we can't get our kit and people in there!

No-one (in the Council, anyway) cares how much it costs - The provisions are there and it's your problem if you can't afford them. Work harder and get a better paid job.

Reading town is one of the best connected places around, with motorway access, trains everywhere to several stations - most of which are en-route from other important places like London and Oxford, plus a frequent and reliable bus network that covers pretty much everywhere... except where I live, where there aren't even pavements. Your choices are car, car or car, unless you're a cool dude who rides a motorcycle.

One at Winnersh, one at Madejski Stadium and one very stupidly on Mereoak Lane, where all the traffic binds up the A33 and surrounding rat-runs... including right outside my flippin' driveway!!

Seriously, it can take 10 minutes to get out of my front drive...

Well if ever you want to see what the Tesla is like, give me a shout. Sounds as if you're close to Reading

Now that the VW Group are back making profits & even boasting about it the UK Government can demand from them a few hundred million to put in EV Chargers around the country which will not benefit the VW Group for a few years since they talk about EV's better than they get on with building and selling any for the European Market.

The UK Government and other EU Government needs to do something to penalise the VW Group who are just taking liberties with the German Governments approval.

Sounds a bit Nissan / Brexit ( PM deal)

  • 4 years later...

It is not only councils around Scotland with Fleets of EV's not being driven it is the NHS and other tax payer funded organisations and agencies.

It must happen in other parts of the UK as well.

Lots sitting about in Angus unused even ones council department have from sponsors.

They say because of the pandemic yet employees are still going about during work in non EV's.
