Best Fuel?

Featured Replies

Shell V-Power, BP ultimate, Tesco Momentum etc... do they give better performance than the regular petrol? Are they worth the extra cost on the long run? Do they really give better mpg?

I've been using Tesco Momentum since getting the Rapid TSI last week.

  • 4 weeks later...

any fuel that is often topped up at local petrol station...nothing worst that petrol station in the middle of nowhere with weathered fuels inside tanks

I once saw study about so called performance fuels. Simply put.

Buy regular most used (fresh) fuel and add your additives

Long explanation...

Performance/premium fuels are created in small quantities and usually weathering in tanks because it is only marketing hype for tuners and rarely purchased.

Furthermore, there is no norms for those fuels. You never know if they are regular high quality fuel with additives or made from scratch.

Nobody know how they were mixed

Results of study were bad for marketing...most performance fuels used to have poor quality compared to "regular" fresh fuel in terms of basic properties such as octanes or cetanes.

see previous warning for reason

I use Shell V-Power Nitro+. And I use Redex with about every other tank! Always preferred She'll V Power above other fuels and can feel difference.

Sainsburys 97 Ron Super Unleaded 'cos it's BP re-branded

The BP garage at the top of our road is 17p per litre dearer than Sainsbury's haf a mile away

I usually use branded fuels when I can,I will use tesco/sainsbury if I need to.

On our Polo I do not use v - power  on a regular basis (it is only a basic 1.4) but do occasionally put in a tankfull if the price isnt too bad.

Tesco Momentum 99 & Shell V-Power Nitro + in the UK are 99 Octane minimum.

and so might others Super Unleaded Greenergy produce and sell to Independents as Super Unleaded be 99 ron could be, but they would say,

so likely it will be 97 ron min.

(In England there is a Discount Fuel seller with 99 ron unleaded.)

http://greenergy.com/uk/independent

(ESSO or other Super Unleaded supplied be GREENERGY in TESCO EXTRA filling stations is not 99 Octane but 97 ron Minimum.)

Tesco Momentum 99 clearly is 99 ron minimum, and can be rather nice like 100-102 ron as available on Continental Europe.

In Aberdeen your 99 ron will be available at Tesco or Shell,  (in Aberdeenshire avoid filling stations with Super Unleaded that has few customers.

& now the Winter Spec Petrol should not be getting delivered anymore, so you can notice a change March to April.)

and it is 97 ron at Sainsburys, Gulf, BP and others with Super Unleaded,  you decide what is best as you can try all.  the Tesco 99 will cost you £2.25 a tank or so less than the Shell V-Power Nitro+

And Sainsburys 97 ron near the same price as the Tesco Momentum.

(I got crap Super Unleaded at Sainsburys Bridge of Dee on a Stage 1 APR Remapped car with switchable map, i knew as i got the Stonehaven

and Sainsbury's denied the Tank at the filling station was mis-fueled with 95 ron Unleaded.)

The reason i knew there fuel was wrong was EPC light and Engine Emissions and i put it to run on 95 ron, but could not reset Limp Mode as had no OBD cable with me,

but i had 10 litres of 102 ron in a can so i stayed in limp mode driving easy then topped the tank after 30 miles with 102, then another 30 miles and a top up,

and was then able to clear the Misfire codes that were logged.

Emptied that tank and never been to Sainsburys for Super Unleaded again.

PS

I fill up in Keith or Elgin / Forres when going up the A96.

This subject has been discussed at length on many forums LOL

I think the question of fuel quality has been answered quite well by some of the Tanker drivers on various forum threads.

They usually say something along the lines of ''There are only a limited number of Refineries, but the additives are added to the fuel at the point of filling the tankers. So even though you might see a BP tanker delivering fuel to (say) a Sainsbury filling station it will probably not have the same additive package that a Tanker delivering to a BP station''.

Sounds reasonable to me - as I previously posted - I usually use branded fuel but not too hung up on it.

There are 2 BP garages near me and a Sainsburys

One of the BP garage's is on a busy crossroads ( most expensive ). The other is in Pannal on the main road to Leeds and there is 8p difference in the price of Super Unleaded, Sainsbury's Super unleaded is 12p ceaper than the one on the crossroads and is only 500 yards down the road from the BP Station

Both are billed as 97Ron, is the BP Station 12p better than Sainsbury's,   I think not

I was only repeating what the Fuel Tanker drivers have put on various forums - what they say sounds sensible to me,the price of fuel is no guarantee of quality anyway because it depends on local competition and where the filling station is situated etc.

As I said - I am not too worried either way but the Tanker drivers all said the same in that the additives were added to the fuel whilst loading the tanker at the refinery - so all I am saying is that it is probable that supermarket fuel probably has a different additive package than the 'same' fuel supplied to a branded station.

just compare consumption and calculate in excel
10 liters / 100 km with 98
vs
10,44 liters / 100 km with 95
is enough to fill 98 which is 5 cent expensive than 95

as a retired tanker driver, you have hit the nail right on the head in your answer.
