Let's talk some more about rusty discs... (new content, I promise)

So I've been around the block a fair few times and I obviously do get that it's fine for discs to get a little bit rusty if the car is left to sit for a while.

 

My car was registered 1 March 2016 and has covered 17k. This is what the discus looked like yesterday, and do bear in mind that the car last did a 400 mile journey the weekend before, so had been sat for exactly 1 week.

 

Fronts

Don't think I've ever seen anything quite that bad. After some seriously spirited braking, i have managed to clear the fronts, on the face at least, but the rears are still a complete mess on 60% of their face.

 

I'm due a first service shortly so will be bringing it up with skoda, but suspect i won't make much progress.

 

fronts do not surprise, and neither do the rears, to be honest. Try driving a little with the handbrake on.. and then some 0-60-0s, hard. I'm of the opinion that 90% of braking power comes from the front, so if you're only ever feathering the pedal, you'll end up with rust on the back. Have to check the state of mine with all the salt currently on the roads.

My 2012 40K miles vRS has had badly corroded rear discs since I bought it at 9K miles. At the MOT today an advisory stated corrosion on inside of front discs. The vRS disc corrosion is far worse than any previous car I have owned.  My last car, a Honda Civic, had its first new front discs at 54K and the rear discs (and original pads) were still good when car sold at 86K.

Thanks; i've tried both of these, and emergency braking from higher speeds. They're still a mess. You really shoudn't have to do this as a matter of course....

Yeah my point exactly. Never had this on any of the cars i've had in 200k or so of motoring. Why do they rust so badly?! Do they just use really sh!tty material?

I don't know where your car is parked but my indie once told me that when he worked for a dealer he noticed how much more corrosion seemed to be evident on cars when they had been parked on surfaces that weren't concreted etc. I think he was referring to gravelled areas

Interesting, 3 years, 32k and my rear discs are nicely shiny, no corrosion whatsoever.

On the road, and there were no gritters up the road during that week.

  • My car is nearly 3.5 years old and just over 28,000 miles, absolutely no corrosion on the discs but they aren't exactly mirror smooth either. The brakes work very well too, which is just as well as someone shot out from a roadside shop parking area yesterday straight in front of me when I was driving past at 30mph! Foot flat down on the brake pedal and hand on the horn, missed her by inches with the ABS kicking in too, cue dirty look from her, she reversed back to let me drive on and then followed behind me flashing her lights at me, honestly! 

Thankfully no harm done to anyone or any car, which is just as well as my car is being VT'd and is going to auction next week after I collect my new car from the dealers in Glasgow, my last car was written off when someone rear ended it, one experience like that is more than enough!
