Fuel Consumption Drop after service

Featured Replies

Hi All

I recently had my 2012-13 Superb Estate 2.0 TSI service by CityGate Watford.  This was an annual service - the car had done c. 37,500 at the time and although I could have had the DSG oil change done at the same time, I opted not to as I am only doing around 4K miles a year (I bought the car used on 31 January 2016), so I figured I could ave it done next year.

Before the service I was getting 40+ mpg on the dash display when I was going on longish runs around the M25 - say from Potters Bar to Tunbridge Wells (where I purchased the car from Caffyns).

Last Monday I went on my first run since the service and the fuel consumption never got above 38.5 mpg. The traffic was no heavier than usual on this run from Potters Bar to Oxford, so M'way pretty much al the way.

I generally tend to use the Cruise Control as I find that gives the best consumption figures vs my heavy right foot :D.

So my question is -  what could have caused the consumption to go down after a service?  Is there a recent engine management software update that is known to have changed fuel consumption figures or should I go back to CityGate and ask them to look into it?

Any change in the weather since your last run? Ambient temperature can have an effect on economy.

Did you get a printout of what was done during the service? It might be useful to list the items on this thread.

Here's the list on my invoice, so it doesn't seem like there was a software update.

  • SKMAJOR4
  • Oil change
  • Spark Plugs
  • Brake Fluid Service
  • Air Conditioning Service
  • TYRE replacement
  • Rear Wiper Blade

Weather wasn't particularly cold - certainly no colder than when I first got the car last year and did one or two trips back down to Tunbridge Wells to sort a couple of things...

So you had spark plugs changed, ask them if the car was on the diagnostics at the beginning of the service and if a software update was done.

You had a tyre replaced, did you check the tyre pressures since and reset the TPMS?

What about oil filter ?? Not on the list ...

It is not a parts list so 'Oil change' is usually assumed to be Oil, filter, plug or washer, but one should never assume....

No Washer Fluid mentioned and no mention of a 'free vacuum and wash', road test report, but then it says SKMAJOR4

So Diagnosis and Update Enhancements and Software / Engine Management updates should be part of a SKODA MAJOR SERVICE @ 4 years.

Brake fluid change was due at 3 years.

Has your actual consumption (ignoring the dash and using actual fill and mileage) or are you just referencing the car's computer?  Some driving data that is used by the computer to calculate your consumption may have been reset during the service?

I'd check what tyres were put on vs what came off. Tyres will have an impact on economy and if the new ones have higher rolling resistance then it could certainly hit your economy.

Last Monday it was very windy. And wind is a very important factor in fuel consumption...

check your tyre pressures?
