ECO Mode and DSG Question

Featured Replies

This might be a silly question but I'll ask anyway..... Driving in ECO mode (with the DSG gearbox) allows the car to coast when you lift off the throttle and then re-engages the correct gear when you either hit the brake or the throttle again.

If you drive around in ECO all the time (particularly on a normal commute with lots of stopping / starting etc), would this constant coasting / re-engaging gears wear out the clutch prematurely?

I ask the question as I quite like the way the car drives in ECO on the daily commute (it's so busy that I have no opportunity for any spirited driving) but I'm slightly concerned that doing this all the time may wear out the clutch!

I tend to leave mine in eco for the commute too, not worried about additional/premature wear.

I thought the DSG7 200 was a 'dry' clutch?

Only the DSG6 was a wet clutch?

Yes DSG 7 is dry but he has an Octavia vRS so it will have the 6 speed gearbox.

OK cheers I just saw TSI.

(I came from a Saab 9-3! Albeit saloon auto not a convertible)

Thanks for asking this question as I'm the same and I was wondering this also! I've started to use normal mode around town and keep eco for motorways until a opportunity appears to use sport.

Yeah some TSI engines do get the 7 speed but the more powerful 2.0 gets the 6.

I went the other way. From an Octavia to the Saab. Wanted a convertible and the Saab ticked most of the boxes. How you finding the Octavia compared to the Saab?

I find the Octavia a bit more "solid" feeling, with the chunky VW-group wheel and it seems to ride bumpy roads a bit better, albeit thats going from an 11 year old car with 90k on the clock that was due a few suspension bush replacements, to a 3 year old car with 34k.

Fuelwise, the 1.8t Saab auto was heavy on fuel - 28mpg at best. The Octavia 1.6TDi DSG is reaching the high 40s.

Getting used to going from a petrol - where the autobox kickdown revved all the way and screamed like a GroupN touring car, to a diesel that seems to fly through the gears.

I miss the steering wheel controls on the Saab, but the radio on the Skoda is a huge improvement.

Thanks for the advice!

I have pondered this too.

It's no different to a gearchange and probably even way-less wear than that.

You are at low revs and low torque and the engine speed is matched via the ECU not dragged up to speed by the clutch.

I'm actually starting to find eco mode fairly decent on my commute, but as has been said before you need to micro manage it.

As my commute is rubbish it's a waste of time even trying to drive swiftly let alone fast, so putting it into eco and using the coast functionality when possible has seen record mpg this week, about 15% above normal.

I know it doesn't make for the most exciting drive, but I have weekends and evenings to make up for that. Plus most days I struggle to get above 45mph on the dreaded m42.

Same here - managed closely the lift and coast works quite nicely on the commute, seems to provide a smoother drive and is starting to give a few more mpg. As you say, I have the weekend to have more fun in normal or sport mode!
