Goodbye big Skoda

Well after several months and some hassle I cannot live with the Superb any more, there are several annoying things including the engine noise which is louder than a van, the worlds noisiest wipers despite new blades being fitted, the most annoying auto intermittent wipers and the fiddliest heater controls ever. It's comfy and the stereo is good but I cannot live with that much engine noise.

I have given the car to one of my employees and bought myself a

Shame to hear that you have had a bad experience with a Superb there. Hope the Volvo goes ok.

good luck with the new car..... can't lose with a volvo built very well

Had my Superb for 4 months now and am still trying to get over that racket. This is my first diesel and I think it's fair to say will be my last. I have to admit though that everything else about the car is fine, it's just so German though, efficient, effective and completely soulless.

Good luck with the Volvo.

Sorry to here about that. I have the 2.5 TDi model and although its a bit noisey when cold, from inside the cabin, I fined it very refined and quiet. Good Luck with your Volvo

Hmmm. Sorry to hear that you have had some bad experiences mate.

I had a 2.0 VW Bora before my Superb TDI 130 and I have just lived with the noise of the engine, nothing to compare it too really.

As for the wipers I completely agree, they are terrible and no matter how many new sets of wipers you have it doesn't make a difference!!

Heater controls for me are the same as the Bora and are very good IMHO?

Volvo's are great though, enjoy the Swdish buld quality, my father has just bought a V70 and he is very happy with it.

It seems rather strange you complaining of noise issues, given the pictures on your posting show what appears to be a Ducati V twin with what also appear to be open race cans, how much noise do you want !! Good luck with the Swedish brick.

Hmm suprised the Superb doesnt have more soundproofing. I personally spent a few hundred on soundproofing the car + top of engine itself and it's made a very noticable difference in general.

The PD130 engine sure has a tendency to be noisy in the Fabia vRS but only really when cold, and post-soundproofing it it's not actually that bad at all. As said I'd expect the Superb to have more soundproofing as standard though, but then it is a car that still is fantastic value for money so there have been some compromises.

Nice new car too though

LOL the day I find the noise a diesel engine makes as good as a ducati on race pipes I'll cry ;) ;)

Wasn't a bad car but I came to it from a Volvo and I should really have bought another Volvo, ah well the guy who has it now likes it :)

A V-Twin is music a diesel is noise :)

Shame it had to be an 'Ovlov cage' . The only Volvo I ever drove was like a gutless tank - but that was an old 340 ;)

My 2.0 TDi Octy is a bit taxi-like on start up, but at 80ish it is perfectly acceptable.

If you have ridden the Duke a lot without ear plugs you might have some noise induced hearing loss already. You lose the high frequency hearing first, so that might accentuate the response to low frequency diesel rumble :(

Best get a nice high revving but quiet petrol Honda !

Only ridden the duc once, raced IL4's for 3 years but even from the one outing I am gonna have to wear earplugs ;) ;)

how did you soundproof it if you don't mind me asking?

as regards to engine noise..

my 2/3mth old superb elegance is noisy on start up from cold on the outside but....

get behind the wheel / window up and 99% of ANY racket from outside is suppressed !.

totally sound proofed.

so i dunno how you guys are saying about racket  outside maybe yes, but inside...er. nope !

When I first got my 100tdi Superb I found it very quiet compared to the noisy sdi golf I had before.

I've spent a few miles in the back of a PD130 Superb Classic... and it is noticeably more noisy than the PD130 Fabia vRS, which I have to sa suprised me somewhat.

does the elegance have MORE sound proofing than the classic ?

or is it the same all through the range ?

Yep thats what I thought.

Whilst the car isn't perfect, and there are some flaws (as with any car) noise isn't one of them, you can barely hear my pd130 from inside, and even outside it's not that noisy even when cold.

As for the actual sound - I know it'll never compare to a petrol V6/V8 but I actually quite like the noise mine makes - kind of low powerful sound, sounds like it doesn't need to try hard to go fast if you know what I mean, and with the Dragon box fitted it really sings at high revs, sounds sweet even compared to a 4cyl petrol!!

In my opinion it's probably not the level of noise, it's more a case of the sound it makes. I personally hate the sound of a diesel engine particularly from outside (or with the windows open) and when the engine is cold. I used to own a V8 Rover with straight pipes and cherry bombs and I am sure there were people (particularly those that were trying to sleep when I would come home at 3 in the morning) who thought it made a racket, however, to me, it was music. I seem to spend most of my time using the term 'for a diesel'. It's fast 'for a diesel', it's quiet 'for a diesel'. Maybe on the inside it is no noisier than many cars, it's just a noise that I think is much closer to a racket than a nice engine tone. A friend also has a brand new Volvo S60 D5 and I have similar opinions on that - in fact so does he! It's his first diesel too.

Having said all of that, my insurance and road tax are due soon and I will benefit from the lower costs so on balance it's a great car - for a diesel!:D

Interesting but the engine in the fabia courtesy car was a lot quieter, also the Volvo engine is whisper quiet.

As for running costs the last volvo cost me
