HEADLIGHT DAMAGE

Featured Replies

Driving on M8 eastbound between J27 and J26 there is a pedestrian only bridge, near Braehead. As I was passing underneath, a couple of the locals decided to lob something off the bridge, which promptly hit the car. From inspection, it looks like the black mastic stuff that you use to seal a flat roof. I think it may have been contained in a polystyrene cup or similar. Anyways, result was, offside headlight unit badly cracked and a replacement required. No other damage. Police have been informed, and the damage will nearly match the insurance excess! So I bought a replacement Skoda headlight unit today, for £491.04. I have bought cheaper cars in the past! Will hopefully get round to replacing over the next few days, and will keep you posted.

I think you've got to consider that a lucky escape - could have been so much worse!

I hope the scrotes get caught!

HOW MUCH???????????

I know it is now nearly 2 years ago, but in May 2015 my front O/S headlight was smashed by a lump of clay about the size of a football which came from underneath a lorry approaching from the other direction.

I had it replaced by my local indie and costs were:

O/S/F headlight unit  £112.12

Labour                     £37.50

VAT                         £29.92 (bl**dy Govt. gets you every time)

Total                        £179.54.

I can't believe that a replacement headlight has increased in price by almost 300% in 2 years.

Even Brexit  can't account for that much. :o

What is it made from - solidified Unicorn tears silvered with platinum?

Main dealer vs indie?

The difference in price could due to xenon lights being a lot more expensive than halogen headlights (if the OP has xenon lights that is...)

Yes, they are xenons, and the unit was purchased from a trade parts supplier in Glasgow who only do VAG parts.

Have a pal who is a mechanic, fortunately. Both inner wheel arches off, under panel tray loosened, front bumper off, electronics transferred from broken unit to new unit, and put back together again in just over 4 hours. Both of us working on it.

No warning lights on dash (battery not disconnected but ignition off) and all is good.

What a fxxxxxg week.
