Buckled Alloy?

Featured Replies

Hit a pothole about a month ago and this resulted in puncturing the NSF tyre. took it to my preferred tyre dealer and they informed me the alloy was slightly buckled but not enough to cause concern.

Coming home from work this week in the early evening twilight, hit another pothole I didn't know about and thought here we go again. No puncture, but at 20mph the sites speed limit; I notice the feeling as if the tyre was square. Haven't taken the wheel off but had a good feel(?) around and it looks okay. I think that if there was a slight buckle in the alloy, then it now may be bigger.

Are they okay to be repaired by a specialist, or should I bite the bullet and replace it? Hopefully having it looked at tomorrow. Chuffing potholes. Best have the tracking checked as well I suppose.

Just had the AFS error and loss of headlight bending function which cost a lot to fix. Damned sensors at three figure prices!

Do not trust your life and others to tyre fitters opinions that you have no idea what qualifications they have.

Have used the same tyre depot for a couple of years now and its still the same chaps! Won't cost anything to have it checked so shall do that just to satisfy my niggling doubt. Off to Devon the end of the week so need to be sure. As for trusting tyre fitters, not usually but these lads seem a good bunch.

A couple of years ago I had a buckled Thermisto alloy picked up by a tyre fitter and on his balance machine, you could see it obviously buckled, had it repaired by a local alloy wheel specialist and had no problems with it, at the end of the day it's what they specialise in so they should know what their doing, cost me about £80. Rather have a wheel repaired than trust a second hand one that cost about the same amount.

Thanks Yesman. Will know Monday from a specialist what the state of play is and how much it will cost. Thanks for your helpful comments.

I cut my losses and downgraded to 17" alloys with higher profile tyres.

Not as pretty but a lot cheaper to run!

Dropped the wheel off for a repair today, Monday. Wasn't too badly bent but for peace of mind its being fixed. Had to use the space saver wheel for it first time. Still had the quality control colour banding on it.First time in 40 years of driving that I have bent a wheel so not to worried.

Got my wheel back today. All straightened (?) out and only cost £40. Chap was a bit miffed when I asked him to refit it! His lad took it off! I find it hard to bend down owing to having a new knee replacement so courtesy to fit it. Couldn't believe it when he had to take the only jack they have off the posh Fiat in the workshop. He didn't like that either. Called the Ferrari a posh Fiat. Don't like them, never liked and that's my choice. I guess next time i need a wheel doing I shall somewhere else.

It really is so annoying. Travelling quite normally, then appears an idiot in an X5 driving in the wrong side of the road, so I had to take avoiding action, thus kirbing the NSF and buckling it - what a crock! Thankfully, I got a brand new thermisto from a really nice Briskodian for £110.
