Octavia 2017 Hatchback & Estate vs Superb 2015 Hatchback & Estate Leg Room

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Is there a difference between the size of the normal Octavia 2017 vs the combi version in terms of legroom, or are they 100% identical ? Does anyone have the exact dimension differences between the two ?

What is the exact difference in terms of leg room you gain with Superb in cm vs Octavia ? Is this extra room to be found only for the back seats or you get something for the front seats too ?

Trying to find out if the Octavia back and front seats have enough leg room or only the Superb will be big enough.

The only major differences you get going from Octavia to a Superb is a multi-link back suspension, more boot and more legroom. Correct me if i am wrong.

Its a bit more than just suspension and legroom.  The Superb is a much more refined car in every way, quality of fit and finish, quietness, sound proofing etc.  I drive both as my wife has an MkIII Octavia as well and although the Octavia is a fine car with plenty of space, the Superb is a step up in every way.  In terms of space, there is certainly more room in both the front and rear in the Superb versus the Octavia - sorry don't have exact dimensions though which I know is what you're specifically asking.  AFAIK, there is no difference in legroom on the hatch versus combi - but I don't have direct experience of the Combi.

I want you to consider the basic car in terms of trim level for both Octavia & Superb.

Quality, fit and finish you mean better quality plastics or more soft plastics on the inside ? (for the Superb)

If you mean the central display the Octavia 2017 Facelift has a 6.5" in every trim level while the Superb comes with a 5" in basic trim.

Are you sure the quietness & sound proofing of Superb, isn't strictly related to the much better multi link suspension in the rear that absorbs much more sound when hitting bumpy road ? Moreover the front suspension in the basic Superb is probably set to be more comfort oriented than the firm/stiffer front suspension found on the basic Octavia, also leading to more quietness & sound proofing ?

Because i think both cars have exactly the same sound proofing.

Not to mention they are build on exactly the same skeleton (MQB) the Superb being longer by 20 cm.

Cargo space, rear and front leg room are definitely more on the Superb as you said.

Right now the Octavia 2017 Facelift in the basic version has a super new engine, a petrol 1.0 L, 3 cylinder with 200 Nm that has around 115 HP, 202 max speed, 9.9 secs 0-100, that consumes around 4.3 - 4.5L.

This car costs here 13,550 euro + VAT 19% = 16,124 euro.

While the Superb in basic version has some older engines like 1.4 TSI 125 CP which has same performance to 1.0 L 115HP from Octavia taking into account that the Superb is 150 kg heavier.

The basic Superb costs 18.188 euro + VAT 19% = 21.644 euro.

4638 euro without VAT and 5520 euro with VAT difference.

I am not interested in diesel options.

Now the question is which car is more value ?

You probably need some extra to add to Octavia to reach the real basic minimum like 4 speakers and electric windows rear but that is not such a big cost overall.

Is the ~5000 euro worth it in the long run ?

Yes, the overall quality of the plastics is better in the Superb.  There are also more soft touch plastics in the Superb.  Which country are you based in by the way - I'm guessing maybe Romania or Greece based on those prices??  Spec levels are obviously different from country to country as the basic spec Superb over here has a 6.5" screen for example.  Without knowing the exact local spec it is difficult to make a direct comparison.  I would guess that 4 speakers and electric windows would be standard on even the most basic Octavia in most markets?  I can tell you that the 1.0TSI engine in the Octavia is great and very fuel efficient.  It is surprisingly powerful and willing considering the size of the engine.  I am very impressed with that engine.  There is a slight three cylinder rattle in first and second gear but it is quite smooth after that.  The 1.4 TSI 125BHP in the Superb is not very popular in this market but the 1.4 150TSI with ACT (maybe not an option for you) receives great reviews on this forum and elsewhere and appears to be a much more capable engine that the 125bhp.

Having looked at both engine bays, bulkhead etc, I can definitely see slightly better soundproofing in the Superb.

What are your main priorities for the car - is it mainly space or does quality of finish and refinement matter more for you?

Thank you for the information.

You guessed right, i am actually from both countries (dual citizenship), but the prices are from the Romanian market.

I would have to test drive both sometimes in April to get a sense of the sound proofing.

Usually if you want to find out what a car is worth you have to compare the basic naked car.

I see many people buying cheap cars then putting all the bells and whistles on it making that car double the price.

But the basic car will still be crap and the basic price reflects that.

The Combi Octavia boot is 610 L and since it is a facelift most problems are usually fixed by now.

The Superb Combi is 660 L.

On the 1.0L the rattle comes from he unbalanced rhythm, which is typical for all 3 cylinders right ?

This is similar to the rattle you hear : ?

Do you find the rattle bad in any way on the 1.0L that may put you at discomfort compared to a normal 4 cylinder engines ? Is the rattle - loader than a 4 cylinder engine noise or just different ?

2 speakers only and electric only in front for basic version.

But with ~200 euro you get 4 speakers and electric for back seats.

In crash tests, talking strictly about adult occupants the Rapid scores overall the best (but slightly worse frontal and much worse neck score), followed by Octavia (best frontal and neck, but bad with lateral pole), while the superb has actually the worst score at frontal hits.

I think it is better to buy a more expensive car in in its basic price, only if that price justifies a more robust and a more functional car, instead of being only about extra luxury and more complex systems with higher failure rate, that will require a much more expensive repair.

The Superb facelift is coming ~2019.

Octavia IV ~2020

I am not sure how strong the multi link suspension is on the current Passat/Superb and the noise problems some users had with them in certain scenarios.

It's just the typical 3 cyclinder rattle.  Nothing too intusive and disappears once you're up speed and then it sounds like any 4 cyclinder.  That's not a bad logic comparing cars in base spec, I see your point actually.  Best to drive both when you get a chance.  There is €5k of a difference which is not insignificant.  You're obviously being quite thorough in your research which is good.  Interesting test crash results.

They say that :

"It is only when the front seat is pulled completely backward that a rear passenger (with a height of more than 172 cm) might get somewhat uncomfortable. " (on Octavia III)

The Toyota Corolla E170 in normal seating position is very nice.

2700 mm Corolla vs 2688 mm Octavia wheelbase.

" The Skoda Octavia however, offers more legroom, even on the rear seat and ample of headroom and shoulder room. "

Maybe some pictures on the net with normal seating position on Octavia III ?
