Machine polishing black magic pearl advice

Featured Replies

I've recently purchased a mk3 Octavia estate finished in black magic pearl that is in need of some tlc. There are no bad scratches as such, just very swirly so I'm looking at recommendations of polishing pads and compound that I can use to bring it back to its best.

Thanks

By hand or via da polisher

It depends on how hard the paint is tbh. I've got a rotary polisher that I've used on my previous cars to remove deeper scratches, but never for a full detail.

As there are lots of swirls really I want to machine polish it and remove them. If this is going to be too risky for me to do myself then I'd probably go down the hand route short term and use something like Poorboys black hole and Nattys black wax to fill/conceal the swirls until I can find a local company to do a correction detail on it.

We had black magic on our old Seat Exeo.

Polishes up very well indeed.

For main correction detail i used Scholl S17+, which finishes down very well.

Thereafter - on further details light polishing/finishing with Britemax Blackmax.

Generally with a Medium hex logic style polishing pad.

Both the above i have used on various cars, so had plenty to hand.

If you were to make one polish purchase for the DA/Rotary - i would recommend Sonax 04/06; as a great all-rounder.

Just becarful with a rotary you can do more damage with them than a da polisher

Yeah, I'm aware that a rotary can do a lot of damage if used incorrectly. I've never burnt through or left trails in the past but I'm a bit more reluctant to do it on this car as it's worth a good chunk more than previous cars I've used it on. Maybe a cheap DA would worth buying.

My understanding is that Skoda paint is medium/hard and I always start off with a fine compound/pad and work up if required.

My main query was if there was any tried and tested combinations that are know to work well. I need new pads and polish anyways but don't want to waste money on gear that's not going to be suitable.

I did a black golf mk6 the other week with heavy swirls and spider webbing

Usual wash method

Meguiars ultimate compound with an orange chemical guys hexlogic quantum pad

Meguiars #205 with a white cg hex logic pad

Meguiars ultimate wax with a black cg pad

Came out looking brand new imo and my mate was over the moon with it

Overall with snow foam  wash iron x clay included took around 6 hours which is quick for me i like to spend a full day on a car just not at this time of the year

I haven't used my DA yet but hopefully very soon, I have the same DA with the AF kit so I can't really comment on whats good for a black vehicle but I would of thought CG Hex-Logic pads & I would maybe try this.
