SE L Drive Amundsen SatNav

Featured Replies

Anyone known if you can customise routes on the built in Amundsen SatNav? I know that the route chosen by the Amundsen when I go on holiday while the "best" but is not the easiest in terms of traffic and ease of driving. So what I want to do is define my own route on the SatNav then save the route for when I go - then recall it and follow the directions.

I can do this with my Garmin but not sure if I can do this on the Amundsen. Also, anyway I can fix a route on my Mac then transfer it to the Amundsen - again can do that with my Garmin.

Normally there will be three routes to choose from, shortest, fastest and most economic.

If you want to tweak any of them I suppose you could add an intermediate destination that your preferred route goes through?

You can set way points on the journey so when planning your route just include them as 'vias'.  You can use map entry to use specific junctions as way points or petrol stations on the route via points of interest which is more accurate than town centres.

Thanks, bit like the Garmin then. I use waypoints on that. I will give it a try - any advice on best way to do it on screen?

I've given up on the Amundsen.

Using googlemaps on smartlink is quicker, more accurate and has more detailed live traffic.

I have thought of that but having the Amundsen fitted then might as well use it - as long as it does what I want.

As we've said before the technology in built in sat navs is inferior to the separate units and will undoubtedly vanish pretty soon what with the Google maps etc. options being available as well.

What I love about my Garmin 660 is being able to plan a trip on the PC (all part of the fun) in as much detail as you want and being able to download it to the sat nav.

It's nice having the larger screen of the built in though, in future I guess it will just be provided for connecting to and viewing from.

TomTom doesn't need a PC to load a complex route, just drop a pin or add an address/intersection to a 'standard' route.

Being able to do the planning in comfort with a detailed map is the most important aspect and such a route is when you most need the satnav, surely.

I guess both TomTom and Garmin allow easy route customisation. Beauty of my Garmin is that I can plan everything on my Mac (with a big screen) in the comfort of my home and then just connect the Garmin and seconds later it is downloaded ready to use anytime. I believe I can do the same with Google maps and then connect my smartphone via Smartlink to view route on the Amundsen screen. So plenty of options. In truth I have got so used to the Garmin, displays, options etc that it will be difficult to justify learning something new.

TomTom will accept a planned route fm a PC or tablet via WiFi including live camera updates

Its the system the new 3008 uses also, so I'm hoping I can programme a detailed route and sent to the inbuilt one over home WiFi also.

Im loathe to dump my current unit as everything in free incl quarterly updates of free world maps, cameras, traffic etc.

The C4 Picasso with centre display would enable me to put my unit on the empty dash area in front of me, which makes it a serious proposition also.

I am a bit stuck on this. If I put in a destination the Amundsen calculates a route, I then put in 'stopovers' to bend the route to the way I want to go and the system then recalculates but keeps coming back to the initial route! I have put in as many as 8 stopovers to force it to go the route I want but then it seems to show multi routes on screen and when I store and recall the route it advises route length approx double the miles and 3 times the time because it doesn't seem to just go through the stopovers and proceed linearly to the final destination - am I doing  something wrong?

Do you put the waypoints half way down the obscure route section each time, rather than small towns, thus forcing it to include the minor (sometimes unsealed, for us) road?.

I put the waypoints on major roads - M5 then A350, etc so that route was finally what I wanted. Looking at map after I finished it then the route was what I wanted. However there were still several routes on screen  After storing route and recalling then had problem

Incidentally I tried to customise route on Google maps on my computer, very simple and easy to do just by clicking and dragging route to where you want to go. looked great and directions followed customised route exactly. However when I "send" it to my Android phone the route loses all customisation and reverts to first suggested Google route - useless!!

My TomTom doesn't like minor (slow?) roads, so I drop a pin about half way along it and force it to be accepted.

That's why I used major roads M5 etc!

Once you've mastered a dedicated one it makes the inbuilt one you've paid for also seem nothing more than an adornment.

The auto manufacturers are into more 'features' than the opposition.......and profit, rather the useful functionality.

I'm more likely to be trying to avoid major roads and looking for the scenic route instead.

But Google maps is useless if you can't send a custom map from computer to Android phone. No point in being able to plot an ideal route on computer if you can't send to your phone to use in car.

A phone isn't big enough for me in any case

I agree but connect your phone with Android Auto and the screen is mirrored on the cars inbuilt screen and the route is displayed and spoken exactly as if you are using inbuilt SatNav.

If you know the precise route you want to take, why do you need a satnav?

I don't necessarily 'know' the route at all.....more exploratory/sightseeing and no need to fumble with a map at all.

Plus distance to turns, total distance left, eta etc.

I and others not only have a destination but have places they would like to pass thru on the journey there.

The Sat-Nav should not only direct you to your destination but include the other places in a sensible route.

I get free maps, traffic, cameras and updates quarterly and I don't have to learn another system either.
