I get free maps, traffic, cameras and updates quarterly and I don't have to learn another system either.

Yes I get the same with my Garmin. I was hoping that the onboard Amundsen would be as good as the Garmin so saving me having to have a separate SatNav. Alternatively I could use Google Maps and Android Auto. It is now clear that the Garmin is far superior to either so will have to continue to use a separate system. Now if Garmin made a unit that could connect to my Yeti's screen by Android Auto then that would be perfect.

I'm waiting to check out the new 3008 which uses the TomTom system which is what I already have, but I'm hoping there is a home WiFi update capability seeing I already have an account.

I guess the profit motive will a priority again unfortunately.

We'll see.

My precise route is one that I use once or twice a year so it would be helpful to have the route on a SatNav to guide me on the drive. I devised the route because SatNavs tend to ignore sensible options - e.g. turning right onto a particularly busy A road in Summer holiday traffic is next to impossible yet the SatNav blindly says "Turn Right onto A35". I adjust the route a bit so I turn left onto the A road then a turn to emerge on the A35 going the right way. No hassle and no danger.

Why not try what I do? Get to the A35 and turn right if possible. If not possible, turn left and the SatNav will keep track of you and get you to turn round at the first opportunity... probably providing you with multiple options as you refuse each one.

I was just giving an example. The route from SatNav sends me down M1 then A34 and M3. All nightmares on  summer Saturdays. My route cuts to M5 then Cirencester and A350 to Dorset. Longer but quieter and quicker. I can tweak Garmin to this route and can very, very easily "drag" the route in Google Maps on my computer. Problem is that there is no way to send the custom map to my phone. It just sends the original undragged map - useless! Reputedly I can programme Amundsen to give my preferred route but haven't managed it yet. Anyone know how?

The satnav is usually set up to give the choice of 3 route options, is yours?

Yes, shortest, quickest and economy. Unfortunately the route I want to take varies wildly from any of those. The SatNav routes take me down the East of UK using M1 while the 'best' route to avoid holiday traffic is partly down M1 then across A42 & M42 to M40 then M5 to leave M5 at junction 11a to Cirencester then down A350 to Dorset. As you can see wildly different to any SatNav's routes. On my Garmin I can set 'waypoints' to force the routing to take my preferred route, you can also set waypoints on Amundsen but it doesn't seem to work in same way as Garmin and route won't follow the way I want. I suspect I am doing something wrong on the Amundsen as otherwise why have 'waypoints' - just can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

Same here. I've tried to get used to the in-built Amundsen but just isn't as intuitive as the Garmin.

Doesn't it drive you mad? How hard can it be to build in simple controls and mapping systems to factory fitted SatNavs, heavens knows they charge enough for them compared with TomTom or Garmin. All we want is a simple to program device with the flexibility of routing that TomTom and Garmin can do without any problem. Why........??????

I am only having one of these as now standard to the car i have ordered.

Tomtom I already have seems to work much better for one seventh of the price!

Dont see why they couldnt just licence the tomtom and install it neatly in the car.

I have mine in the dash top box where I can open the lid slightly as i put a movement restrictor in the hinge, rotate up the tomtom and have it in line of site with the lid acting as a sunshade.

Connects to phone by bluetooth and gives up to the minute delay information and will change route if needed. Free map updates for life as well.

Anyone know how to turn off the radio while using the Amundsen SatNav? Today I just wanted to try the SatNav without hearing the radio but couldn't see anyway of turning off the radio without also turning off the SatNav. In the end resorted to turning the radio volume right down - but that can't be the correct way surely? I assume I am missing some simple process.

I just turn the volume down.

Might sound like an obvious question to some of you more savvy members, but on the Amundsen, is there any way to SEE which way the 3 suggested routes actually suggest, BEFORE pressing the buttons?

Testing it out on our journey back from Inverness to Gateshead /Newcastle last week, we decided on the A1. However the routing it suggested was the route via Jedburgh, which we know from experience is shorter, but generally much less appealing due to hgv traffic.

Can the routes be expanded on screen in some way, prior to selection?

On this particular  journey, one we do often, it didn't matter, but we  have some long distance journeys soon where we are not as familiar with the routes. Thanks for advice.

I've not yet found a good way so I'd be interested to see if there is a better way?

You need Smartlink and just connect your Android phone via USB.

Lee has answered the question, use Smartlink to connect Smartphone. Incidentally I have now discovered how to define an exact customised route in Google Maps, save it then recall it to use through Smartlink (Android Auto) to guide me by my preferred route to my destination. You have to customise the route on your Smartphone (not on computer), save the route to the Homescreen and then it sits there as an "App" waiting to be used when needed.

Thanks, Lee & Expatman - I'll see if I can master it, I only got a mobile phone last year!!!
