213.6bhp 350ftlb.. SMF and clutch or just uprated clutch?? Opinions please

Featured Replies

Never ending list of modding grows and grows..... So I fitted a new clutch and flywheel 12 mths ago.  Expected to make about 200bhp on a reserved map. A couple of weeks ago I picked it up from motorsport place at 213.6bhp and 350 torque.

He said he tuned it down as clutch was standard etc  anyway, booting from 2.5-3 k it slips slightly and bites.  I half expected it to to be honest.

So, on this power with sensible booting would people advise a SMF and uprated clutch or just uprated clutch for now??

Monies are dwindling as upwards of 3.5k has been spent on this thing and thats with me doing the work...

Any advice and experience welcome. Also if anyone wants to contribute a G's fabia funding page can be set up.

I'll get my coat.......

Happy bloody monday folks!!

I wouldn't go with a SMF personally, in the long term (years) they damage gearbox's due to it having no damping.

I'm running a Sachs sre 4 paddle clutch that has a uprated dmf, it's a heavy pedal and is quite grabby until your used to it but will soak up abuse as it's rated to 450lbft

You can have a uprated normal clutch plate with is rated to 400lbft.

But if you do go for a SMF the anything from Sachs, helix or CG Motorsport will be fine.

 Cheers stevo,

So you think an uprated clutch kit would suffice for now.  And leave flywheel be for a bit?

Sorry I should have made myself clearer, the Sachs kit i have has 2 clutch plate options, a paddle and normal type.

And standard dmf is only rated to 300lbft so unless your really careful it won't last long. You'll need a whole clutch and flywheel kit. I was just saying that with that type of power your not actually limited to a SMF.

Got you... Need to look for a competitive priced SMF and clutch kit then.  I can feel the £££££'s falling out my pocket already!

Don't muck about then, SMF's are horrible, get the uprated non-paddle Sachs DMF kit like Stevo suggested.

I had a a Helix SMF on my old Fabia vRS, as I killed my original clutch with a Jabbasport remap.

Although it handled the extra torque with no problems & the power transfer was amazing, it was horrible to drive around town. Noisy on idle, juddered a bit on release although that did ease off a bit.

Okay, hearing feedback on smf's...

Sep, hear what your saying ...... I'm a listening:biggrin:

shopping now now to see what I'm up against.

cheers all

Not sure what torque mine is producing (low smoke map with a GTB1756 blower), but I have a standard dmf with an uprated slightly thicker clutch fitted; holding perfectly so far. I've done around 15k mileage since the mapping and I love making a second/third/fourth gear torque steer pull as much as the next man.

As above - I have only ever heard bad things about SMF's in a daily car.

Mornin J,

You mind what clutch you had fitted??   I was looking at the kits suggested above but as my overtime has stopped it's just gonna take me way too long to save up. About 16 k ago I had a new dmf and clutch fitted ( then modding bug hit me after  )I was thinking about throwing a chunkier clutch in for now and being not too mad booting constantly. This map Im running holds the power pretty much up to 4.5k- 4.8k  so I wait to boot it until around 2.8k revs.

it slips in 3 rd briefly 4th briefly and 5th..... a lot and 6th well dont bother, when it bites I had no idea these things were so quick.... im not sure what suprises folk more the speed or smoke lol

Will try and see if I can find a deal on dmf and flywheel but from what im seeing im looking at £900 +   and thats gonna take some saving...

I'm afraid to say I can't give many details as I don't know many details. It was originally fitted to a fellow Brisky member's vrs running a 2260 at around 360ft.lb or torque, the owner ran the clutch in for 500miles or so, then did a track day. At the end of said track day it slipped a couple of times so he returned it to Xman who gave him a full refund.

I took it off Xman's hands after speaking to the previous owner for a hugely reduced price.

I imagine it may start to slip in the next 20/30k but by that time I'll be looking at breaking/selling the car anyway.

All I know is that the clutch was definitely thicker than the standard Sachs one that came out. The fly wheel was exactly the same.

Don't forget that my car may well be producing much less than your's and therefore the above may be useless at harnessing your power.

I like to think my car is somewhere in the 200-220 power bracket, therefore I'm guessing at 320-340ft.lb of torque. But I could be completely wrong!

I get what your saying,  Xman gave me some advice but couldnt really help out with regards a clutch at the minute.

I honestly thought after all my tuned motors that at 34 and married with baby etc that the modding bud was long gone out my blood,  Everyone keeps telling me Im too old for this game.  It is heart breaking modding motors but addictive.

I got the fabia as a reliable family car, Im sentimental with Skoda anyway as I worked there for so long. But the turbo was tired so I changed it for a bigger one, then a few months later I thought I may as well work towards a Airtec and Egr delete etc Then as Id done that I thought I may as well do suspension. Then more and more and more and it's like I cant bloody stop!! my ford puma was 200bhp but the fabia feels much quicker, quicker than my cosworth too.  Its like hows that possible for the we furby? !

I know some folk who start with a goal do clutch then brakes then engine etc etc but for me it's all just kinda happened, and i'm left with a bit of a monster sat on the drive lol  But the clutch etc,  thats it, bled dry and Mrs G has run out of patience now so I have to go easy for 12 months hence get something that will do the job for now and in the future upgrade.

Thanks to all for chewing the fat on this one......

G

Just fit the uprated Sachs non-paddle clutch then since your flywheel is new, yes you'll knacker the flywheel eventually but it'll take a while, you need the stronger pressure plate and harder driven plate to cope with the torque.

Is that the one about £591 from Awesome gti and the like??  want to make sure im looking at the right thing. And Sep what you make of this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DriveTorque-Stage-2-Clutch-Kit-Skoda-Fabia-Mk1-1-9-TDi-130-vRS-05-03-07-05-/311343171447?hash=item487d7fc777:g:6vcAAOSwqu9VNnLa

Well, the 'Stage 2' reference is never a good sign since it usually signifies bullsh!t, however Larkspeed are a very old and reputable company and I would imagine they'd look after you if had any problems.

Darkside sell the non-paddle SRE clutch for under £500, I daresay you could do better if you shop around but it won't be less than £400.

Pricey game,  well to offset the cost I have put the original seats back in and am flogging the sparco's Torino's and harnesses subframes etc got them advertised up my end which should give me a bit towards clutch kit. Kinda figured that a clutch may be a little more important than my arse.   So apologies for wasting time with the Airbag switch question because it's no happening now....Need's must.   ( Sigh )

Quite right, better to be more go than show.
