I've just had a thought the knocking noise was coming from the passengers side  but when I had my tyres changed the noise moved over to the drivers side is there a possibility the noise is coming from the wheel and they put the passengers wheel on the drivers side.

Possible but seems unlikely. You should be able to see wheel damage with wheel off and inspecting it. You could move front to back but I would be thinking Mikeholroyd suggestions in post 2 are more likely.

Thanks Mike much appreciated.

First thing I would try is to tighten the front subrfame bolts.

They are stretch bolts and stretch loose..

And its free..

I would jack it up, support on axle stand on jacking point then put a scaffolding pole or similar under the front wheel/tyre in question and move it up and down to simulate suspension movement on road and I bet you can track down where the noise is coming from.

I bet you'd not. When my suspension was knocking, three separate outlets including a main dealer could not find any movement in any component, though all three agreed the knock was there. It was only when the struts were removed that you could tell the top bearings and mounts were shot.

Got to be worth a shot, free after all.

Never once heard of subframe bolts working loose. Octavia is well known for wear in suspension components as above in this thread. You'll end up replacing something for sure, and the first thing to check would be the cheapest to replace without stripping the struts out, namely bottom wishbone bushes and drop links.

Whats cheeper than putting a bar on a bolt???

Just because you have never heard of something doesn't say it doesn't happen.

Jettas ,mk5 golfs,B6 Passats etc all suffer from subframe bolts stretching..........

Octavias share the same suspension clip.
