2005 Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG Problems

Featured Replies

Hi All,

New to the Skoda mark and DSG 'boxes, but beginning to think this car may have been a bad buy. I don't tend to keep cars long but this one I intended to keep this car for a while.

Ok so the issues that need looking into:

1. Cruise control not working - need to remove and clean switch

2. Front lower arm rear bushes need replacing

3. Rear parking sensors - make a crackle sound - new buzzer ordered waiting for delivery

4. Rear wiper - literally 30 mins ago stuck in traffic went to clear the back screen did one sweep and stopped dead.

5. Now the biggie - The gearbox, when I picked it up on Saturday I noticed that the car jerked a lot when slowing down, and when pulling away there could be harsh vibration intermittently, if driving at a steady 30 the revs would fluctuate slightly and there was a rumble that would come and go, then yesterday when I changed to coolant had the car running bonnet open could hear a loud rumble coming and going from the gearbox area.

More info on point 5. I had the flywheel replaced this afternoon, the rumble seems to have gone, but the vibration is still there if anything seems a little moreso, when I pull away there can sometimes be a very slight delay from when I press the accelerator to actually moving, doesn't do this always. Also occasionally when changing gears the revs can jump up by about 2-300 revs, again doesn't do this always. The clutch centre that did the flywheel have said there is some wear in the clutch, although they don't change clutches on DSG's.

I'm hoping this can be resolved by a gearbox software reset/update, maybe a oil change, has any one else come across this or have any advice that I could try?

Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance for any advice you may give

What is the mileage at?

With the exception of the transmission, those are all well known, common issues.  Especially so in a 12 year old car. It is a shame they have been saved up for you in one go though. Better to keep on top of those sorts of things, none of those is horrendously expensive.

Was this a dealer purchase or private sale?

When reading the start of your dsg issues it sounded like a DMF issue. You have now replaced that but the other issues have become more prominent.  So, it seems like there are transmission issues.  The 6sp wet clutch DSG set up is fairly reliable IMO but admittedly is expensive to work on.

It "could be" the clutch packs. Have you had a VCDS scan? That would be a place to start. You can do  a DSG reset / clutch adaption - it might be worth a try.  If you do not know the DSG change history - an oil and filter change would be adviseable. If it has been neglected damage could have been done.

Parts alone for an oil change will be £100+ or to get it done £160-180.  But compared to the cost of repairs, it may well be worthwhile trying it.

Hi The Client,

Car has a 145K on the clock with 'service history' up to 130, although I'm a little skeptical about the last 2 stamps and apparently it's had the DSG oil done at the last service.

It was as I originally thought a private sale through ebay but when I got there it was a small car trader, it was fairly cheap for what it was so don't mind spending a little to get it right but at the same time don't want to throw good money after bad.

I'm going to pop along to a local indie this morning to get a price on dsg oil change and reset.

Thanks again for the advice.

Yes that maybe the best course.

They may be able to remove the DSG sumo plug with the snorkel left in and some excess fluid will run out if the engine is running. It may give an indication of the recency of a change. But if there are problems they will probably want to drain it and see what it all looks like.  The adaption is not a long process so should not add huge amounts to the DSG fluid change cost.  There is a VCDS owner location in these forums - if you can find an owner near you, they may be willing to do it for some form of nominal compensation but if at the garage anyway, and they are not wacking you with horrendous  charges, then go with that.

PS, you are probably aware, if they are a dealer and the DSG is cactus, you may have a right to return the vehicle or get them to repair it within certain time frames. Depending on price paid vs market value, disclosed issues etc.

Small update and another questions, so today I've been to one audi/vw specialist, another mechanic that was recommended by alot of other mechanics including the place that fitted the flywheel, and a phone call to the main dealer, so here is the outcome -

1. Audi/VW Specialist - £120 +VAT for DSG oil change - they said not to bother with the clutch adaption/reset

2. Mechanic recommended by lot of folks - £150 to £160 for DSG oil change, he test drove the car and said everything seemed ok if anything there was some wear to the clutch packs.

3. Main dealer - £175.00 inclusive of VAT for DSG oil change, I asked about software update they said they will check once the car is there which is an hours labour at £82.50 +VAT

I'm thinking of going to the main dealer, any thoughts

Up to you but you should not have revs flaring between changes, so something is not right - which is why the adaption might not be a bad idea after the DSG service.  Reading your delay when pulling away, I do get that on got that on my previous 6Sp DSG, it takes a moment for the clutch to engage after taking your foot off the brake.  The DSG does not behave exactly like an old torque converter auto.  But the flaring doesn't sound normal.

You can try the oil (and filter!!!!!) change. Both are supposed to be changed and the filter is quite a bit more work to get to. The dealer's price "should" include both.  Although I have heard of them only doing the oil.   Not sure about your other prices in terms of if the filter included or not.  The cost of the fluid, filter and o ring is over £100 alone a year ago when I purchased.

The prices are close enough to go with the one you have the most confidence in.

I'm not aware of an update that is going to update your transmission behaviour but you live and learn so will await thread updates.

I think I'm going to go with the dealer option will ring them in the morning find out if the price they quoted includes filters.

I'll keep this thread updated
