Battery Top up charge: Disconnect with ignition switched on??

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i would like to top up the battery but am at a bit of a loss:

1. Owners manual page 182, Caution tip states only disconnect the battery if the ignition is switched on

2. Owners manual page 184 states to switch the ignition and all electrics off before disconnecting the battery.

I would prefer to charge with battery out of the car!!!

Any thoughts to clarify the matter will be welcome!

Regards,

Charles

I'd imagine you'd turn everything off first as that's what I'd normally do, but must admit I'd get the answer from your dealer or SUK - that is pretty annoying for a manual

I don't see any reason for disconnecting the battery for a convenional trickle charge (unless of course you can't get a mains supply near enough to the car). The charger can't increase the terminal voltage sufficiently to cause any harm to the car's electrics.

A heavy-duty fast charger is a different matter but I doubt if you have one of those.

If you do remove/reconnect the battery then be prepared for the alarm to be triggered.
