1.8TSi Oil consumption

We've got a 2011 1.8TSI (52k) and its juts starting burning lots of oil. 1 litre every 1000 miles or so!! I know its a widely reported issues on here with various threads.

Ours has an extended warranty, but the dealer wants £!40 just to look at the car.  They also state its NOT A KNOWN issue.

 

Is there any issue codes, recall notices or other such sticks I can beat them with ;-) 

 

Help appreciated, as just spent £1k fixing the clutch on the bloody thing.....

The £140 will be for a Oil Consumption Test.  Best tell 'The Dealer' or who ever to go read some TPI's.

When they say it is NOT KNOWN issue, I would rather look for another one who knows. TPI from SKODA you need is 2027920, below first version/1, current one is 2027920/3. As this is internal information, do no tell them straight you got it too, if they keep saying rubbish, than you can show them. When engine is qualified to be fixed for free, parts are supplied by manufacturer but labour will be paid by the dealer, therefore they know nothing ...

 

VW has its own 2025422, simmilar has AUDI and SEAT too.

To claim it is not a known issue then the dealer is doing one of two things;

 

1) Pulling the wool over your eyes / preparing you for the default - sorry sir, nothing we can do to help financially.

2) Confirming they know very little about the cars they are tasked to maintain.

 

Cut out the middle man and ask Skoda UK to open a case. You'll still need to pay the initial diagnostic fee but if it is found to be as a result of the inherent, well known and well documented manufacturing defect then there is a good chance you'll get a nice big chunk of financial goodwill...

I know I'm likely to get flamed for my ignorance but what would happen if you put 15W/40 in instead of 10W/30?  In the old days, worn engines were always fed 20W/50 treacle that would never blow past the piston rings; I know modern high-tech engines are a very different beast but I just ask the question.

 

Obviously, I'm talking about cars which are OUT of warranty, like mine.

Well, could help for a while on condition you will give engine time to warm up. But it can still bring more stress to timing tensioner and also the camshafts bearings and turbo on cold starts. But when oil scraping rings are blocked (the drilled holes in them or rings itself in the grooves), they can´t work neither with more viscose oil properly.

 

VAG concern does not precsrip any viscosity for engines except Russia market for these beasts. What they only insist on is their VW norm/specification (I prefere fixed interval with VW502.00) See owners manual

What I am suspision about is their internal info for Russia, as besides VW norm and viscosity in owners manual they ask for ACEA A3/B4 oil, no Cx which some of the VW502.00 can also have ... Is that not strange ...? It is said the reason is more sulphur in their petrol and better cleaning properties of A3/B4 instead of newer Cx ...

Hi everyone.

 

59 plate L&K DSG TSi 50,000 miles and started using loads of oil, certainly more than 0.5 litres / 1,000km. I've been topping up using the proper 504 grade but I'm beginning to wonder if it's a waste of money because any oil I put in will not last anywhere near the 18,000 miles variable service before it is replaced. 

 

Like Noddy90 above, I'm thinking of changing to something more viscous and cheaper but I don't know enough on the technical side. Do I have to stay fully synthetic?

 

Anybody know a reasonably safe alternative?

 

I'm not re-mapped, hardly ever use "sport" mode, do a reasonable mix of "around town" / motorway and I tow a caravan maybe 750 miles a year. Total annual mileage about 5,000.

 

Exhaust pipe is sooty but never had any problems with MOT.

 

Somebody, please advise.

with such annual mileage I won't be bothered, my was 1l every 700 mls (If I'm lucky), drove almost 30 000, with no changes (in case of oil consumption).

I've been worried, like many people, by the high oil consumption of my 1.8TSi.  Took it for its annual service today where the garage informed me that they'd had to replace an incorrectly threaded sump plug.  Worth checking...
