Heated windscreen sparkle?

Featured Replies

Hello. I am loving my new car but have a quick question. When the sun is on the windscreen in certain conditions it appears as if there is glitter all over the screen.  At first I thought it looks like paint overspray but then I realised it could be the heated screen. Does the heated windscreen sparkle/look dusty in the sun?

You will see the very fine wires under certain conditions when your attention is drawn to it. Normally your eyes will focus further ahead and the wires wll be out of focus and you will hardly ever notice them.

The S3 doesn’t use the wires it’s now a metal coating

Maybe it's the metal coating I can see then. Or maybe it is overspray?

I haven't noticed it on mine and just to say, in passing, that the heating element in the S3 is a microns thin metal film not a wired system.

All I have ever noticed is that from the outside it looks bronzed when the light catches it.

Whoops soryy guys, you beat me to it

If it’s overspray then you will be able to feel it (put your hand inside a carrier bag and rub the screen, the bag will emphasise any contamination.

Thanks. Surely it won't be though on a brand new car. I assume the windscreen isn't put in until after the spray job?

I doubt it is overspray but it could be some other kind of 'fall out'

Thanks. The windscreen feels smooth not rough and it is in the screen in a consistent pattern. I still think it's the metallic layer of the heaters. I used fallout remover when I prepped the car. I am going to strip the car down and start again in a few weeks anyway so I will claybar the windscreen to check.

Now the sun is out I have noticed "over spray effect" as well, mind you compared to the S2 the S3 screen is crystal clear.

I only see it when driving directly into the sun - rest of the time - screen is clear.

Yep same here, only in certain conditions, otherwise fine. Thanks for confirming :-)

Could it be that the Dealer failed to completely remove the protective coat used in transport?

I thought it was confirmed as normal? I've decOntaminated  the window and it's still there.

Ok, after spending quite a while looking at/correcting/polishing/cleaning my windscreen I really can't see any sparkling or flake pop of any kind.  I've checked at various angles/positions in the sun and all I see of is the purplish haze/tint from the anti-UV treatment.

Oh and whatever you do, don't ever scratch your windscreen! (or in this case, make sure your dealer doesn't - w@nker5!)
