CEL light on, and ASD also on intermittently

Featured Replies

Hi all

My 2011 1.2TSi SE has had the CEL constantly on since yesterday, car drives fine with no noticeable changes.

Also when sat still with the engine idling and out of gear the ASD light comes on and stays on, goes off when engine is switched off and restarted.

Does anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?

You need a code read to point in the direction of the cause of the CEL. Is the 1.2tsi a chain drive? CEL lights can be an early indicator of a timing problem from loose or stretched chains. It could be something minor or something far more serious.

Even though you do not notice any major driveability changes, do not ignore it.

Well, it shouldn't be the timing chain but not impossible I suppose.

You can get a local garage to do a fault code read, or get a member with VCDS to do a full scan (better) if there is one located near you. Small compensation offer probably required for the latter. It will only take minutes.   There is a VCDS owner locator in these forums.

Or buy a cheap OBD dongle and use torque or carista apps yourself as a start.  Again, these will not be as a complete picture for full coding / customisation or non engine faults as VCDS but should be sufficient for your fault codes.  VCDS is the best option but circa £300 new dependent on version...
