vRS Running Problems Saga

Featured Replies

Bloody hell, running problems doing me 'ead in!

When I bought her she was surging. Told by tuner that it was prob' a bad superchips map. VAG-COM showed 17704 which they said backed this up.

Paid for a new map. Seemed to smooth the problem out for a week or so. Then the surging turned to major power loss - have lost, it seems, all of the power provided by the map. Car seems to run at what I guess is standard or there or there abouts. Used to be a bit of an animal in 2nd from 2k but now it is comparatively civilised all the way through all the gears and not as powerful at all.

To make matters worse she has gotten really juddery in terms of boost coming in and dropping out - very noticeable and far worst than the surging.

Popped her in to a Skoda main dealer for an opinion (Winchester Motor Company - good guys I found). Diagnostics found a couple of probs - one unrelated to the engine. The engine fault was the same 17704, they had it back in to change the temp sensor - which they thought was prob at fault for the poor running. They had it today, took the sensor out - checked, no fault so put it back in. So it's not the snesor causing the bad running. They reckon it's the map at fault now!

So now it's back to the tuner to see what they can do with the map and get it on the RR to see what is really happening power wise.

I bloody love this car but I just want it to run properly - aaarrghhh!!

Perhaps fitting your new VRS Wheel Centres will soothe away all the agony!. ;)

What revs are we talking about here?

And who did your new map?

Edit: I doubt very much your problems are down to a map.

Rich - talking about 2500 through to about 5000, but sometimes it is very apparent in all gears, sometimes it is just about apparent in the lower gears.

Less noticeable when gunning it, more noticeable when accelerating progressively - especially in 2nd gear.

Loss of power very noticeable, especially in 2nd - used to feel like it would rip your arms out at 2500 - now its totally civilised all the way through.

Skoda dealer reckon they can interrogate the ECU with the diagnostics kit due to the remap.

I asked them to check the MAF, dump valve, pipes etc which they said were all fine. Think I'll have to play around with these a bit myself. Not a mech minded bloke so wanted them to do it but can't help but think that everything is done by diagnostics these days. Saw on here that sometimes pipes can be leaky and the N75 valve can play up etc.

Steve - maybe they will! As for the test drive - very tempted today at Winch Skoda by the demo they have there....

im just having the exact problems myself:( spoke to jim at star performance who did my map and he said its probably a tiny leak in the dump valve!! mines goes very well when the outside temp is low, about six degrees or less anymore and the car looses its power, advised it was the coolant temp switch. Jim said the same thing...dont take it to skoda but to a specialist.

Kit - have you got it sorted now then by changing the DV?

Interesting what you say about the cold days, yesterday morning at 7am it was bloody cold here and car was noticeably better (although still not as good as was). Also Skoda identified 17704 as the coolant temp sensor being faulty - they were to change it but when they took it off they said it was fine and refitted it.

So what you said strikes a real chord. So, is yours cooking on gas again?

havent got the DV yet, jim at star is going to send me a forge eliminator one over when im back from my hollibags:) he said that on the newer models of the MK1 that the coolant temp switch have all been changed to one with a green cap.

My car evens sounds different when its cold outside!! it has a real rumble which it doesnt have when its warm outside!!! bjut when you go into the garage and try to explain what the prob is they just look at you as if you heads!!!

To be honest i have really had enough of it!! its been like this for the year that ive had it!! it hasnt been out of the garage and on the road for longer than a month at a time!!:(

Have asked the garage to give me a price to change it for a furby RS.....best they come up with a good figure:)

  • 1 month later...

did the dump valve sort the problems out

Hi

Nope, the DV didn't cure it buddy. I fitted a TT DV, a new N75, cleaned the throttle body and cleaned the MAF. And still the issue lives. Told the people who remapped it that it'll be coming back their way soon (they want it for a few days - I can't give it up at the moment due to pressure of work). In the meantime I have a couple of exchanges with Ross (Lummox) and I'll be popping a new temp sensor in (

I would have certainly changed the temp sensor Sean, to take it out and then refit it seems a waste of time when a new £20 could elimante one more thing.

Have you thought about trying some logging with VAG-COM, I don't know too much about it but I'm sure someone on here does and if not the SCN boys have some reall experts at it who will no doubt offer you advice.
