Sat Nav

Featured Replies

For some years, I have been using a Snooper which helps me by showing the current speed limit as well as actual road speed.
With this new Yeti I'm updating various bits and would like to ask about Tom Tom Sat Navs.  The reason for not going to the latest 'Snooper My Speed XL' is that the subscription comes to £29.99 and the on-line reviews regarding the database and updates really aren't too encouraging.  My old Snooper Neo had a £10 subscription and I put up with the once per year update which TBH wasn't top-line for accuracy so I suppose my argument would be "Is the support 3 times better than before?"

The questions are these:
-Does the TomTom screen clearly show you both road speed and speed limit?
-Can the device display just maps (like the installed Amundsen and other factory jobs that have a Map button) which just scrolls along in sort of free running mode showing where you are, without having to put in any specific post code requirement?
Many thanks
Clive

Why are you asking about Tom Toms?
If you have an Amundsen II it will display most speed limits and is pretty accurate when they change.
It will show a map in any zoom ratio so you can watch what side streets are coming up.
It also shows turn instructions on the Maxidot between the dials as well as the spoken instructions in a male or female voice.
And I believe the post May 2015 versions can load a speed camera database.

Good point, but this car has the Bolero Infotainment unit.  At the stealers, I found a brochure for a Kenwood update that includes navigation. I thought that it looked to be exactly what I need.  But of course "That unit won't fit on your car, sir". Hohum!

The TomTom will revert to 'map' if there is no destination entered .........at risk, I repeat, I don't give a fig about any inbuilt profit source.

I get everything free incl 4 updates pa on any free map I want......and in line-of-sight too.

You could try Sygic Speed Camera & Traffic on your mobile.  I paid £7.99 for a lifetime/Premium licence.

It also displays your speed and the road speed limit, and can be overlayed onto other applications including Google Maps.

It gives you four options on how to display the info;

Head Up Display, only really useful at night.

Dashcam.

Map

360° View, where it displays all traffic cameras around your vehicle.

Our overseas trips are preloaded on the free map which makes escaping Pisa, Rome, Paris etc in a hire car a breeze, rather than hiring their unknown device and spending an hour with a map and trying to figure out the system before escaping.  I can't see us going without ours.

You can load POIs with the speed cameras.  I use PocketGPSworld which updates every week.  I have not ever been able to use the Skoda POI Portal getting multiple errors and data outputs that would not load onto the Amundsen.

I use a VW POI loader (in German) and this works every time (as do many others see the ICE section)

I tend to update mine every month and find that adequate and add in the National Trust, English Heritage, RSPB etc., as one POI file with individual icon some with alerts (cameras) these sound even when the radio or media is playing.

Our speed cameras are juggled every few days requiring constant updates via the pc

My tomtom gives exact current car speed which I use instead of speedo.

It indicates the speed limit but can be incorrect. I have come across a lot of roads in the midlands with recent lower speed limits not updated on  satnav.

If a route is set it gets all current traffic issues live and updates delays and gives alternate routes.

map updates and live traffic is free. I understand it uses mobile phone feedback to determine where traffic is slow or stopped.

i have to pay annually for constant speed camera updates.

my ordered car has to come with built in satnav otherwise I would have left it out at £700 value. I probably won't use it much as tomtom seems better.

it cost me £89 and fits neatly into dash top box so hidden when not in use.

Re tomtom

You can put your finger on the arrow head and report an error eg speed etc via a drop down box.

True but I would rather look where I am going than try to select an icon at arms length on a small 4.5 inch screen!

I did use to correct errors years ago, eg it kept wanting to direct me down private access road, or along a green lane which was blocked against vehicles at one point, and used this system which seems to work. Have never really bothered with speed limits though.

Mines the 6 inch one but you definitely have to be careful and only when no other traffic near.......or stop.

For us, the overseas application makes it a must.

Ok corrected a speed limit today. 40 has changed to 30 since I was here a month ago
