Fuel filler screw on cap retainer loop thingy !!

Featured Replies

Help please the good people in Skoda land

does anybody have a proper name or prefably the part number for the rubberised retaining loop on the fuel filler that goes around and retains the fuel filler cap, ours has snapped ( it only lasted 10 years !! ) nearest Skoda dealer is 1 hour or so away and I'm not been impressed with them in the past, I don't want to have the faff of ordering the wrong part........

cheers all ( I can see the filler cap being left on a fuel pump in the future )

The cap has grooves in so you can stand it on the filler flap.

I replaced mine with a similar one from ebay but I am getting more like 8 years out of them....

I tend to agree, never seen a separate part listed!

I bought a used one for my old VW Passat 4Motion once I saw that my wife's Polo had a retainer fitted to its cap, that used one lasted me for the time (11 years) I had that car after wife got her 2002 Polo.

One issue I have currently is, my wife has a South African built August 2015 Polo, and its fuel cap retainer is made from what I'd say is the wrong material, and it has a mind of its own and rips/whips the fuel cap of where I store it on the access flap.

This retainer reminds me of the washer fluid cap on my older daughter's old early 2002 6K Ibiza - same as other cars we had but material wrong grade and that cover hardly ever got refitted correctly by her, the material was far too hard!

Edit:- just how hard can VW group make some simple things to get right!?

The litte strap is snapped on mine but I've never had any other car that had one and have never left a fuel cap behind, so I don't bother to fit a new one.

I'll probably have to eat my words now :D

I made a new one for our civic using some nylon braid...   Might be an option?

Surely if the other one lasted ten years, a tenner for a new cap is more than worth it.

Totally agree, it would pay for itself if a cap was left on a fuel pump just once !! I didn't even think to view fuel caps on eBay tbh

many thanks for the replies, most helpful

Mines just snapped!

Leave it off and hang your cap on the filler flap. You'll never leave it behind!

Problem is that would mean a new ( and most likely different) key. The strap on mine broke years ago and I've never been able to find one. I find the design of fitting the cap on the flap makes me aware.

I looked at the idea of Araldite on the last short portion of the break and fitting a bit of heatshrink, over that , till I realised I'd had a Senior moment ,and heatshrink  needs HEAT to shrink . NOT a good idea near the fuel tank ( unless I could get the car end off, but I’ve never bothered)

The new cap comes without a lock barell. You just swap your old barell into it.
