having trouble engaging reverse gear on my petrol Octavia some days have no problems then others when it takes 4/5 or more efforts before it engages local garage thinks it the clutch as it's done 98k and think it's still original one,but would I notice all gears being difficult.anymore else had similar problems and able to advise what you did to remedy this thanks.

There's a procedure to reset and align the shift cables mechanism - I'm sure someone will be able to direct you too it - may help, much cheaper than the labour involved in a new clutch.

Losing reverse is usually a sign of gear linkage problems, so I'm with Stevie D on this one.  Look on u-tube for a 'how to'.
