Replace Console Bushes

Featured Replies

I need to replace the console bushes on my Fabia and there's lots of great infomation on this forum to complete the job, however mine is a 1.2HTP 3-cylinder and I'm certain the sump is going to prevent removal of the 18mm bolt from the wishbone on the OSF :-(

I'd really like to tackle this myself, as I've saved money by replacing the heater/blower resistor (thanks to this forum!!!!), and I've hopefully fixed the coolant leak by using PTFE tape on the radiator fan "thermo-switch" (thanks to "Tech1e"). The cheapest quote I've received so far, to replace the bushes, is £196 from Camberley Serivce Centre, but I would rather do it myself if it wasn't for the sump!

Looking for some encouragement to take on the task! How can I remove the bolt with the sump in the way and how easy is the extra work???

Can't remember if I've done that side on ours, so probably not.

There may be enough movement in the O/S engine mount that simply jacking with suitable cushioning under the sump on that side gives enough clearance?  If there's still not enough, loosen or remove the bolts that hold the O/S engine mount to the chassis so you can jack the engine further up.  I don't advise removing the single nut that connects the two halves of that engine mount (official instructions forbid it), nor removing the three bolts that hold the mount to the engine, they're prone to damaging the threads in the alloy on the way out.

Let us know how you get on.

When I did mine removing the engine mount as Wino describes, to enable the engine to be jacked up, did the job. Good luck. The worst part was removing the long bolt that passes through the front bush. It was very, very tight and there is a risk of the steel bolt stripping the thread in the aluminium alloy subframe. Best way is to work as if you are tapping a thread in reverse - 3 revolutions out, then 1 revolution in.
