Default boot vs. versatile boot floor vs. spare wheel option

Featured Replies

Hello!

Wanted to summarize the options available from another perspective - how does these options affect overall load area (how flat it is) with rear seats folded and/or removed. Please comment if my assumptions are incorrect.

Rear seats up:

1) Default boot - most spacious boot option with a minus of noticeable load lip

2) Versatile boot floor or spare wheel consume +/- the same amount of boot space; positive aspect is that load lip becomes very minimal but you loose considerable vertical volume

Rear seats folded:

1) Default boot - noticeable level difference between boot floor and folded seats (seats are higher); not good for loading heavy long items

2) Versatile boot or Spare wheel option provide more or less flat overall load surface

Rear seats removed:

1) Default boot - overall flat surface

2) Versatile boot or Spare wheel - noticeable level difference once again as now boot floor is higher than middle of the car

In my opinion when transporting bulky items 90% of people will just fold rear seats down and therefore versatile boot floor or spare wheel will give the flat load surface. In those rare cases when rear seats are completely removed I could take the extra hassle to remove the versatile boot floor or spare wheel setup to get the flat surface I need.

I would choose between the default boot and spare wheel option for my new Yeti but knowing that I would transport bulky items occasionally I would go for the extra safety of spare wheel while gaining +/- flat load area when seats are folded (and flat load area being the decisive factor).

You missed out "rear seats rolled forward" option.  In this configuration the non-spare-tyre option also has a level floor and more load room (rather like the "seats removed" configuration but with a shorter load length).

If I don't have the spare nor the versatile boot - is there a place to hide away the emergency repair kit and other stuff like safety jacket, first aid kit etc.?

Safety jacket goes in a pocket inder the drivers seat. In France if you break down you have to be wearing it as you get out of the car hence has to be accessible.

I understand that in diesel cars with adblue the pump and gunk is in a bag to the left of the boot in a pocket behind the wheel arch.

Petrol ones may still have the storage area inder the floor mat as in my 2014 car which keeps all tidy and out of the way.

Emergency repair kit etc. fits in a well under the carpet of the models without spare wheel. There is a bit of extra room where you could put some other small items.

Not in the diesel ones, the recess has been used for the adblue tank

Diesel ones get the pump and bottle in the left (looking into boot) cubbyhole and there is room on all models for a First Aid kit in the right one, even with straps to hold it up.

Didn't know that! Controversially you have to wonder how quickly the trend back to petrol will turn into an avalanche and diesel vehicles will become pariahs on the used car market, with values tumbling. Motor manufacturers are scrambling to fast track petrol engine development and production while hoping diesel demand holds up until they have ramped up petrol car output to enable them to promote 'clean' petrol.

It is press hysteria driving this.

As far as I can see a Euro 6 diesel is much better and cleaner than a petrol vehicle overall as it uses less fuel

The issue with diesels is the older ones pre 2005 and most of those will be scrapped by now anyway or approaching life end.

Diesel technology has to be developed as our commercial vehicle fleets depend on it and petrol is not a viable alternative.

i agree that the smaller diesels make little sense once all the extra parts have to be added but 2lt and bigger will still be the car of choice for high mileage use.

lots is sensible buyers out there who will buy diesels secondhand if prices are reasonable.

I agree but you are assuming that decisions will be driven logic. There was no scientific logic in the previous government drive to convert people to diesel engines "to save the planet" and there will be much emotion and little facts as national and local governments demonize diesel by propoganda, restrictions and taxes.

That's the way it works now. Me, a cynic - surely not!

Well at the time they were focused on co2 emissions and diesel helped with that.

Nox should have been considered but was ignored.

Higher taxes on diesels will hit commercial transport and increase price.

modern diesel trucks, buses and cars are cleaner than they have ever been.

Scrappage schemes don't work as those with relevant cars can't afford the gap to a new one.

Even the most aggressive exclusion zones are for pre Euro 6 vehicles, Approx up to 2014, like my current car.

On road testing of Euro 6 diesels show that in typical driving they emit many times the NOx and particulates compared with standard lab tests.

Taxes can be tailored in many ways to avoid commercial vehicles but hit private cars, particularly in towns & cities.

Back to the topic about boot - would you suggest default boot or spare wheel (choosing between these 2)? According to comments above it is possible to store pump, first aid kit and other small items hidden away in the default boot option.

I am likely to be a dog owner and (not planning to use a cage, just ordering the special rubber mat) so maybe some dog owners can advise on this as well.

I have ordered my car with the net program option. Looks really useful and would also keep a dog in the boot area.

Others with dogs suggest the raised floor with the spare is more useful as the dog finds it easier to get in and out.

(Not a dog owner though myself)

Makes sense - as the dog has to just jump up vs. jumping up and then falling down again. Spare gives the extra safety feeling as well.
