which gasket???

Featured Replies

Loosing a lot of oil down the right hand side of the block. From what i can see the oil is coming from the 2 half moon rubber gasket looking spots ive pointed arrows at in the 2 pics attached.

the pics arent great and its bit tricky working out exactly what your looking at but im sure some of you lads will work it out

Im wondering are the 2 half moon shape gaskets where my oil is leaking out, are they part of the actual rocker cover gasket itself or are they 2 seperate little gaskets all to themselves?

just doing a bit of searching on parts site. thinking the first pic mite be of the timing chain tensioner seal...???

2nd pic half moon looks like it mite be part of the cam cover gasket

anyway,see what you think

thanks

I've got a similar issue with mine.   Mine seems to manifest its leak from the rear half moon gasket,  however having replaced the rocker cover gasket twice now. Is still leaking so I think the timing chain tensioner gasket has something to do with it.  Check out some of the posts on my build thread here on page six:

The front gasket half moon gasket I think you are identifying here is separate to the rocker cover gasket I've tried replacing.  To solve the issue,  you will need to slacken off or remove the cam timing chain tensioner assembly which is a reasonably involved job.  There is also a metal gasket that needs changing at the same time.   You will need a special tool to slacken off the timing chain first off.  You may also need to remove the inlet cam but reports on sites like Vortex suggest the gaskets can be changed without removing the cam.   I haven't done this yet,  my tool arrived today via an eBay seller,  next I need to get the gasket set.  I do have a spare knackered engine to practice on so I will have a go on that first.

Do a search on YouTube for timing chain tensioner gasket replacement and you'll see some examples of what's involved.  Otherwise I'll report back on mine on the next couple of weeks.

thanks Lee. think youre right and certainly looked like the rear half moon where the greater leak was on mine also.

very interested to see how you go with tensioner gasket As looks like ive a leak there too. 180k miles on mine so no surprise shes sprung a leak or two. Will follow youre thread for updates.

best of luck with it and cheers for the reply

add it to the shopping list:) thanks Phil

from few vids i watched looks like will at least have to loosen the caps on the in take camshaft too get enough room to raise the tensioner and remove the old gaskets. does that sound right to you guys??

You may have to move one cam out of the head depending on how new the chain is. You will also need to remove the main timing belt from the pulley to do this. more info here - http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/octavia-mk1/drive_unit/1.8_ltr./132_kw_engine_mechanical_components/engine_cylinder_head_valve_gear/camshafts/removing_and_installing_camshafts_and_camshaft_adjuster/

OH. not what was hoping for. way beyond me grade i think. thought i could do it without hVING TO TOUCH that end. will see how Leeboy gets on and then go from there. although the timing belt n water pump are due so if thats the case would be perfect time to do them all. would love to even give someone a hand while they do it, just to learn a bit and see it done first hand. youtube is good and that but nothing like being there getiing the hands dirty...best of luck with it Lee!! and thanks for all the links and info n advice fellas
