Engine Querys

Featured Replies

Currently have my Octy up for sale, one guy had shook hands and we had a deal but had since pulled out due to engine "issues".

He he said the car has a high idle. On first start it idles above 10k revs for 15-30 secs then goes down to 800 rpm where it sits solid. I believe this is normal can anyone confirm ?

He also claims the engine is "knocking". There is a ticking noise when idling but not knocking. I also believe this is normal.

Shes done 185k but still pulls, doesn't use any oil/water etc.

I'm presuming 1.8t vRS your referring to? I would imagine the idle on startup is normal but not owning a 1.8t I'm not 100% sure. As for the ticking that's normal too, to a certain extent as the injectors tick. If you can upload a video of the engine noise and startup idle that would make it easier?

That is completely normal mine idles at 740 to 760 on my vag scanner ... also the ticking noise is normal the 1.8t injectors are noisy and also there is a relay on the drivers side of the car that is also noisy which ticks ... if people aren't aware of this it can sound daunting

As already said, idle behavior is correct, it could also be the evap canister ticking which is normal too, power steering pumps can knock with a bit of mileage too.

Sounds more like he didn't check how much the car would be to insure to me  :)

From dossing around here for 5+ yrs, your buyer doesnt know the engines very well, or got cold feet and wanted a way out.

Charcoal cannister tick is completely normal.. many a discussion/banter about it over the years.

And that idle is spot on.

So. A few other people came and viewed her and all tried to get her for dirt cheap saying the engine was making a dodgey noise ! I think she's good and as such decided to keep her ! Anyone else have any experience with noises that may be something other than the canister ? i.e. Bottom end or pulleys or bearings ?

@VrsMule

Any chance you could get a video with the bonnet up and link it?

Might be diagnosable

There are some real planks about out there.

The charcoal canister ticking has been covered by earlier posts, the fact that it doesnt use any oil or water (same with mine) should say something about the internals. The start up rpm and idle rpm is spot on,

I would just say go and listen to a few others then come back.

Good examples of these cars are starting to become rare and the prices could go up, Ive seen a black one for sale on a 5 plate with 60k advertised for £3995 on pistonheads.

If you can afford to, keep it, assuming its good everywhere else.

Good Luck

From years of selling cars I have come to the belief that everyone is a time waster until they hand over the money. Unfortunately it must be 10/1 fo time wasters/serious buyers.

Out of interest how much is yours up for as mine on very similar miles
