Advised " slight oil leak "

Featured Replies

Ok, bit of background history

had the car since July 2014 49k miles

mot/ service may 15 note on invoice slight engine oil leak

mot/ service may 16 no advice ( same garage different tester )

mot/ service today mechanic shows me slight misting of oil on rear of block

car has done approx 9k between each service, no oil top up required since I bought it, checked oil level regularly since May 15 there has been a loss of oil between services of approx half the measurement on the dip stick showing full - top up required between both previous services ie 2015 - 16 - to today

so as long as I keep an eye on the oil level on the dipstick should I worry about the slight leak ?

I would not worry to much about it, just check the oil regularly and top up when required, in my 13 years of MOT testing about 75% of vehicles leak oil slightly from some where, indeed a saying about landrovers is if the ain't leaking oil something is wrong.

I normally check my oil every second fuel fill up.

That sort of oil usage is not a problem. But it would be good to know where it is coming from, if it is just seeping from somewhere non-critical / unstressed then yes live with it.  If it is something that could degenerate rapidly, like a main seal, then you want to keep your eye on and consider repair so it doesn't leave you stranded.

Finding out the cause of slight leak would be the sensible move seeing as it is not self healing but what ever the source could at some point give up more of the engines life blood.

Onto the road where there are other road users innocently travelling.

Slight oil leak could also be due when oil gets to warm in some circumstances and it finds a way to be released or escape from engine when some quantity of oil gets like air..
