Thanks auric have looked on eBay and gum tree dealers may be expensive I only want it for a spare.

Can you not use a 16" steel wheel as a spare wheel? Same as what is probably supplied with spare wheel option, same as the Yeti.

As Kenny said if it's just for a spare get a 205/55/16. Much more choice and cheaper. Keeps the diameter the same.

A 205/55/16 is 1 inch smaller in diameter. A nearer size would be 225/55/16.

Or if you want the narrower 205/60R16. Fits better into the spare wheel well, and has the same diameter.

Longship not sure what you mean there. It's the wall height of the tyre that gives you the overall diameter.  It's the same overall diameter because the tyre sidewalls are different. 205/55/16 is the same as 225/50/17. 205/55/16 and 225/55/16 are exactly the same diameter, one is slightly wider than the other.

https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1=225-50-17X6.5ET45&wheel2=225-45-17X7.5ET40&fcl=50mm&wcl=30mm&scl=50mm&sr=0mm

Scroll down to minus sizing.

205/60/16 is a different diameter. It's 3% bigger diameter according to the calculator.

@spottydog I think you have to recheck your table, are you looking at the overall diameter or circumference of tire? Both 225/55R16 and 205/60R16 matches thr PO's original tyre size with a margin of -0.4 to -0.7 % (which is next to nothing).

My point of having 205/60R16 is to have the smaller tyre width for a better fitment into the spare wheel well. If OP specifically want a 17" size, use 205/55R17, which has the same cirumference/diameter as original tyres on the car.

I was going to put new tyres on all the wheels on car and keep one tyre for spare as one tyre has realy good tread want to put that on a spare I get.

thanks everyone for all the info ....

Ok. Just as I remember it, a 225 tyre in the well will lift the floor plate related to it's original height. Original spare wheels are 205 wide and will just fit underneath the flooring.

Spottydog, the second number of the tyres spec is the wall height, as a percentage of the width. So 55% of 225 cannot be the same as 55% of 205.

You are right regarding the second number being the ratio but 225 and 205 are the width of the tyre not the side wall height.

I just read the data on the tyre comparison chart.

Yes you're right. I had put the wrong ratio in the table as they were the tyres on my Octavia. I need to pay more attention :-)

Hi all

so if I get a 205/55r17 rim the tyre I have on car will fit and also fit better in boot ? .

thanks again for all this info

Yes, the 205/55/17 is effectively the same diameter as original, and will fit better in the spare well.

Ok thanks longship and every one else I'll look for a rim that size

But you won't get a 205/55R17 rim.

;)
