Hello, we are about to take the plunge and buy the above, I will trawl through the forum but can anyone give me some pointers on known trouble spots with this model engine combination that I should look for?

There are two varieties of the 1.2 engine, a 6-valve 54 bhp one and a 12-valve 64bhp one.

 

I think the 6-valve engines seem to suffer exhaust valve problems more often than the 12-valve ones. 

On the other hand, the 12-valve can have EGR valve problems, which the 6-valve never does 'cos there isn't one.

Timing chain problems aren't unheard of in either variety, though I think re-designs of the hydraulic tensioner and chain guide rails in later (2004>) cars reduced these issues.

Fuel efficiency is not close to that claimed in the marketing blurb. My partners 1.2 12-valve gets a since-bought (5 year) average of 41mpg, I think that's a good chunk less than Skoda claim, in fact my 1.4 Polo does slightly better even though my commute is under 5 miles each way.
