Chrome switches retrofit

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I've been floating the idea of potentially swapping out the headlight and window switches to those used in the Golf.

From what I can see they are identical parts but have chrome on them rather than a flat black. It's a minor thing, but in the VRS most of the dash has chrome surrounds (air vents, climate control switches, Columbus rotary knobs etc.) So would be good to have the other switches to match if I can source some at a reasonable price.

Does anyone know if VW AG China parts are legit, i.e. actually made by VW and not some Chinese knock off VAG parts?

Link below to show what I'm referring to, though not necessarily looking to order from Aliexpress - which possibly will have Chinese copies of genuine stuff.

https://m.aliexpress.com/s/item/32723705225.html?trace=storeDetail2msiteDetail#autostay

Can anyone see an issue with swapping the Skoda ones for VW ones?

I.e. 5e0941431d being swapped for 5gg941431d, and 5e0959857a to 5gg959857a

Thanks

There shouldn't be any issue provided your connectors match. I wouldn't bother with the Chinese copies though. Try a breaker's to see if they've got any sporty Golf's. Not sure if the Audi's are the same too? Might be worth a look as well.

I managed to find some images of the back of the switches and the connectors look to match the existing ones so I think we're good there.

Definitely don't want any Chinese knock off parts, so will be avoiding Aliexpress, and that's where the question about VW China stuff came from. Can't stand Chinese knock off kit, want to do this with proper OEM parts.

Breakers is a good shout, might see if there are any local ones with the Golf in. Cheers :)

I can't remember off hand if the trim piece with the holes for the switches in is the same in the Golf as the Octavia. But you will be able to just detach it and put on the Octavia one no problem.

What colour backlight you got?

Excellent point!

Just checked it and the backlight to all switches and infotainment buttons etc is green. It appears the Golf stuff has white backlight, so I think the mismatch in the backlight colours would bug me!

Interesting! Never thought about the L & K model having the switch. Do you know the part number for that switch as that would be perfect; chrome with the green backlight :)

Does your window switches on the doors also have chrome on too?

Thanks

Only light switch, think that rest is the same as "normal" octavia.

Perfect, thank you! :) Gonna hunt one down

Are you going to get all the chrome trimmed stuff you can @ahenners?

Yeah it's on the list of stuff to do.... Ideally I'd like to swap the headlight switch, the mirror adjuster switch, and all the door window switches.

I almost bought a light switch from the Golf (there's one on ebay for £32) but then realised the backlight was going to be the wrong colour. Can't find the suggested Skoda L & K switch from the previous post anywhere for less than about £80 (local dealer priced it up), so keeping my eyes peeled for one, but not prepared to pay £80 for what is effectively just a bit of chrome....

Still doing research on the window switches; I think the only straight replacement option is the Golf ones, but again the backlighting will be white rather than green. Will update the thread when I've managed to source some bits :)

I'm not sure how the back lighting is done, you might still be able to use the Golf window switch unit but take off the switch rockers themselves and put onto your existing one.

The rockers would be easy enough to pop off once you get the facia panel off I think. However this is where I might be wrong in that the back-light itself might be in the rockers and not a small light on the unit. Hope that makes sense! :)

If not you might need to get window switch units from an L&K aswell.

I could be wrong but I don't think the window switch units from the L & K have the chrome tips.

According to Post 7 on this link, it looks like it might be possible to swap the rockers onto the originals to retain the green backlight. Unfortunately in German, and the google translation isn't perfect:

Yeah looks like they're fairly dismantleable. Which is a big bonus for your project. Finding a smashed Golf would still be a reasonable option.

Found a solution for the mirror switch adjuster. Part no: 5G0959565Q (for LHD) or 5G0959565S (for RHD) - Guessing it won't matter if the knob comes from an LHD or RHD, but probably easier to source the RHD part in UK. Looks like you can take the chrome knob from the Golf 7 part and fit it to the existing bit in the Octavia. Looks neater than the standard one.

The knob should just pull off. And go back on with a dull click.

Minor update: My Golf 7 door mirror switch arrived this morning (£12 used on ebay - 5G0959565S) so I removed the existing mirror adjuster knob and replaced it with the one from the Golf.

The knob was quite stiff (steady!) to remove from the Octavia, but managed to prise it off eventually with a trim tool/lever wrapped in a cloth to prevent scratches/marks around the knob. The bit that it attaches to looks quite delicate, so care needs to be taken otherwise you could potentially break the shaft (not doing this on purpose - honest!).

Also ordered the Chrome auto headlight switch from the L&K yesterday, for £57 :blush  I've been scouring eBay and various breaker sites for the part 5E0941431N over the past week or two but had no luck finding one. Took the plunge and ordered a new one, at what seemed to be a pretty reasonable price including postage, compared to other dealers. Briskoda parts (Mike @ Seat Worcester) were considerably cheaper than my local dealer (£80) and Skoda Parts Online (£68). Helpful bloke too and would use for other part quotes in future.

No ETA as of yet as none in UK stock, but expect it should be a couple of weeks at worst.

Also ordered some chrome surrounds for the top dashboard vents from Aliexpress.

Usually dislike cheap Chinese tat, but they came highly rated on a German RS forum and were less than £2 delivered, so at worst (wurst?!) not much lost.

Just got the Window Switches left to do then. As far as I'm aware there is only a solution for the driver's side master switch. The individual switches on the other doors are different on the Golf and the Leon than the Octavia. Not looked at the Superb parts bin yet though, so there may still be hope. Currently scouring eBay and other places for the driver's door window switch at a good price, but this may have to wait until next month as I'm saving for a wedding and already spent a fair bit on various car parts this month!

Sorry haven't added to this thread as I haven't had the time with both cars in my possession simultaneously for several weeks - however, the auto light switch for my FR is identical in terms of backlighting to the VRS (but different to green L&K) but does have the chrome bling bezel you seek...

The VRS switch also has Green backlight like the L & K. Are you sure your FR switch isn't red or white backlit?

Just checked and you are correct for the Leon - I have instrument lights set to the lowest setting as most of my driving is at night (to satisfy the inner Saab Driver / Fighter Pilot in me!!!) so do not notice them too much. This mod is obviously not for me...

Leon light switch settings are:

Auto - Amber

Side Lights - Green

Front Fogs - Green when activate

All other controls are dim red.

The light switch colours do not change when the mode is switched to/from sport mode - unlike door cards red/white.

No worries, thanks for checking. I have my backlight on full so I'd definitely notice :tongueout:

Thanks for posting, that does look good and fits well with the chrome theme. However I have a flush fit dual USB permanently fitted to my 12v socket, for charging my phone, so it's a function over from scenario there :)

Old thread resurrection! :time:

After having done the mirror adjuster and the headlight switch some time last year, I totally forgot about this thread and the window switch for the driver's door.

Managed to find a relatively cheap genuine drivers door window switch last week (£15 delivered), and it has arrived today:

fkJoz2.jpg

Will need to part dismantle the new switch and the old one to swap over the circuit board with the green backlighting. It's not a difficult process but requires a bit of care otherwise lots of white plastic bits fall out of the switches and they become floppy.

Will update the thread when I've fitted it.
